Harry Kane is one of a select few players at the World Cup with a golden patch on his sleeve, but why?

England take on Croatia in the Group L opener tonight, with Thomas Tuchel looking to get off to a winning start in his debut at a major tournament with the Three Lions.

If England are to succeed at the World Cup 2026, it will likely be Harry Kane who spearheads that push for glory.

Why Harry Kane has golden patch on his England shirt

Kane is one of a select few at this tournament who is wearing a golden patch on his shirt sleeve, and it's all down to his past goalscoring exploits at international level.

More specifically, it's because he won the Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Many will remember that glorious run to the semi-final, ended by tonight's opponents of all teams.

Under Gareth Southgate, the England team were revitalised, and Kane bagged six goals to end as the tournament's top scorer.

Thanks to that accolade, even though it was eight years ago, Kane is recognised as one of the special players at this World Cup.

Tuchel and co. will be hoping that they can go all the way this summer and make sure that, in 2030, the golden patches are sharing shirt space with a second star above the Three Lions crest.

As per our England vs Croatia prediction, we expect a tight 2-1 win for the Three Lions. Those three points would be a huge boost heading into the more favourable games against Ghana and Panama.

It's worth noting that Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo also has a special patch on his sleeve, which is for playing in his sixth World Cup.
