Watch reigning champions Argentina face Egypt in Atlanta as Lionel Messi looks to guide his country into the quarter-finals.

La Albiceleste survived a monumental scare on Friday when they needed extra time to edge past World Cup debutants Cape Verde.

Argentina vs Egypt: key information

When Messi put Argentina ahead after 29 minutes and broke the resistance of Cape Verde, few would have believed that the holders would need an 111th-minute own goal to save their blushes.

The Blue Sharks lit up Miami and, when the final whistle was finally blown, there was relief painted on the faces of the Argentine players.

Having avoided a colossal upset, they’ll need to switch back on quickly to overcome an Egyptian side that would have been watching Cape Verde’s performance closely.

Argentina vs Egypt: World Cup 2026 Preview

Argentina fans may well have been on edge as they entered extra-time against Cape Verde, but the Albiceleste have developed a knack for getting over the line when a match goes beyond 90 minutes at the World Cup.

They have triumphed in 10 of the 12 matches that have required extra-time, four times without the need for penalties. They’ll hope there is no need to extend this record in the last 16, and head coach Lionel Scaloni will once again be looking to Messi to fire his side to victory.

The Inter Miami forward just keeps setting records, becoming the first man to score seven goals in two separate World Cups with his strike against Cape Verde. He’ll be determined to add to that tally and extend Argentina’s winning run to nine games across two World Cups.

Stopping Messi and Co. will be a huge challenge for an Egyptian defence that has conceded once in each game in North America. Perhaps even more worrying for manager Hossam Hassan is that left-backs Ahmed Fatouh and Karim Hafez are both struggling with injuries.

While defensive concerns will have to be addressed, the Pharaohs must also find a way to get the best from Mo Salah. The former Liverpool man was on the periphery against Australia, but showed his quality and coolness under pressure with his panenka in the penalty shootout.

Having helped Egypt secure their first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout game, Salah was moved to tears. He’ll hope there are more tears of happiness in Atlanta
