Newcastle United might have already replaced Arsenal-bound Bruno Guimaraes

The arrival of 20-year-old French midfielder Aladji Bamba from AS Monaco in a £34 million deal provides Eddie Howe with a gifted technician possessing certain similarities to Newcastle’s departing talisman.

At 20 years-old with limited senior experience, Bamba is far from the finished article and almost certainly won't have the same impact as Newcastle's skipper just yet - but the Toon Army are almost exclusively paying for potential.

The midfielder rose rapidly through AS Monaco’s academy ranks, reaching a point where he has ultimately commanded the significant fee Newcastle have paid.

Is Aladji Bamba Newcastle's Bruno Guimaraes replacement?

According to Transfermarkt, Bamba had a standout breakthrough campaign in 2025/26, making 25 senior appearances across Ligue 1, the UEFA Champions League, and domestic cup competitions.

His composure and press resistance earned him a nomination for the 2026 European Golden Boy award before Newcastle secured his signature on a five-year contract.

Bamba operates mainly as a deep-lying midfielder, and his greatest strength lies in the vision he possesses when facing stubborn, compact opponents.

In an interview with Sky Sports, a former coach highlighted this precise quality when evaluating his skillset.

"His main attribute is playing against a low block, those tiny little passes to break down a low defence," Monaco set-piece coach Abel Lorincz said.

This description mirrors the one of Bruno Guimaraes' defining features at St. James' Park. Guimaraes has excelled at taking up positions on the right-hand side of the edge of the penalty box, slipping subtle, eye-of-the-needle passes through tight defensive lines into the path of runners like Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy.

Bamba’s ability to turn under pressure, roll the ball in tight spaces, and weight precise passes into the penalty area suggests he can potentially grow to replicate that creative outlet in the Premier League one day.

Bamba’s rapid ascent has seen him go from footballing obscurity with local side Blois to the Premier League in five short years. After logging 22 appearances and 4 goals for Monaco’s U19 side in 2023/24, he quickly adapted to senior football, featuring in 25 first-team matches last season, while boasting very high pass completion rates.

With Arsenal actively in talks for Guimaraes, losing the Brazilian remains a significant blow for Newcastle.

However, in Bamba, the Magpies have acquired a high-upside midfielder whose technical profile on the surface appears tailor-made to fill at least some of the void.
