Late Martin Terrier effort lifts Lyon to victory over Rennes
Martin Terrier’s late goal saw Lyon snatch a 1-0 win over Rennes on Friday night to close in on second-placed Lille in Ligue 1.
Moments after Adrien Hunou missed a glorious chance for the hosts, Terrier struck four minutes from time to give Lyon all three points at Roazhon Park.
It was a victory Lyon just about deserved on the balance of play, but a game with plenty of chances had looked like ending goalless.
Nabil Fekir had the best of those chances when his 13th-minute free-kick was pushed onto a post by Tomas Koubek.
Rennes forward Hatem Ben Arfa carried the threat to the club where he began his career with a number of chances, but like his team-mates he could find no way to beat Anthony Lopes.
Hunou should have done just that in the 85th minute when Rennes poured forward on the counter-attack, but he missed the target from six yards.
And it proved costly as Lyon went straight down the other end where Terrier’s left-footed shot from close range won it for the visitors.

FourFourTwo was launched in 1994 on the back of a World Cup that England hadn’t even qualified for. It was an act of madness… but it somehow worked out. Our mission is to offer our intelligent, international audience access to the game’s biggest names, insightful analysis... and a bit of a giggle. We unashamedly love this game and we hope that our coverage reflects that.
