Gylfi Sigurdsson’s penalty denies Chelsea from reaching Premier League summit

Chelsea missed the chance to go top of the Premier League as they slipped to defeat at Goodison Park against Everton.

The only goal of the 1-0 victory came from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute, Gylfi Sigurdsson converting after Edouard Mendy’s rash foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Chelsea hit the woodwork twice through Reece James and Mason Mount but they were unable to deny Everton, who celebrated a much-needed win in front of their fans for the first time in more than nine months.

Anwar El Ghazi’s last-gasp penalty stunned Wolves as Villa claimed a 1-0 derby win at Molineux.

The substitute struck from the spot in stoppage time after Nelson Semedo brought down John McGinn.

Douglas Luiz had already been sent off for the visitors with five minutes to go and Joao Moutinho was also dismissed for Wolves in stoppage time.

Villa had lived dangerously before their late winner as Fabio Silva hit a post for the hosts and Emiliano Martinez’s brilliant save denied Leander Dendoncker a second-half opener.
