Roma triumph despite Doni dismissal

MILAN - AS Roma moved back up to fourth in Serie A after battling to a 1-0 home win over Chievo on Saturday despite having goalkeeper Doni sent off on 11 minutes.

Daniele De Rossi headed in a corner in the first minute but Roma's hopes of victory looked to have suffered when Doni, only playing because of an injury to fellow Brazilian Julio Sergio, raced out of his box and handled Elvis Abbruscato's shot.

However, the hosts continued to have the best chances and new striker Luca Toni went close three times on his first start.

The on-loan Bayern Munich forward also earned a penalty in the second half but David Pizarro, on spotkick duties with Francesco Totti again injured, saw his effort well-saved by Stefano Sorrentino.

Roma had a poor start to the season but have since forced their way into Champions League qualifying contention under Claudio Ranieri with Wednesday's 2-2 draw at Cagliari, where they conceded twice in stoppage time, a rare blemish.
