The take on Chelsea is that they’re a one season on/one season off Jekyll and Hyde of a club. But the truth is that their form often rollercoasters within seasons, too. Take 2012/13, when the defending European champions stumbled out of the Champions League early under Roberto Di Matteo.
Rafa Benitez was an unpopular choice as a mid-season replacement, yet he steadied the ship and even earned grudging respect (and a send-off round of applause) from some Blues fans by taking the club to third in the Premier League and victory in the Europa League.
Chelsea are back in the final this season, although they've already finished third and will return to the Champions League in 2019/20. The west Londoners are the bookies' favourites to take the title.
