Ex-Adelaide coach in line for Olyroos

Football Federation Australia are reportedly honing in on frontrunner Josep Gombau to take charge of their embattled youth setup.

The Australian reports Football Federation Australia are set to break their trend of appointing Australian coaches - such as Paul Okon and Aurelio Vidmar - by signing the 40-year-old Spaniard.

It is expected that Gombau will be offered a contract until the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, tasked with getting the Olyroos to their first Olympic Games in 12 years.

Gombau transformed an Adelaide outfit that traditionally played defensive football into a slick, attacking football team notching up an FFA Cup win and two finals series appearances.

Players such as Awer Mabil, Jimmy Jeggo, Craig Goodwin and Jordan Elsey are among the young players that thrived under Gombau during his time at Adelaide United.

Gombau left the Reds a year ago to move to New York to train run an academy for youngsters.
