Brisbane Roar captain Matt Smith and two-time Johnny Warren medallist Thomas Broich are the latest players to be fan-voted into the A-League All Stars to face Italian giants Juventus FC in Sydney.
Smith and Broich played every minute of every match in the 2013/14 season as Brisbane Roar clinched the A-League Premiership and Championship double in impressive style and have been rewarded with places in Josep Gombau’s squad for the August 10 encounter.
This is Broich’s second selection, having played 60 minutes and providing the assist for the All Stars’ only goal against Manchester United last July.
“I really enjoyed the experience last year, going into camp with the other A-League boys and playing against Manchester United so I’m looking forward to it again,” Broich said.
Smith was recovering from season-ending hip surgery when United came to Australia last year, making him all the more eager to be involved this time around against the Italian champions.
“It’s an honour to be selected so big thanks to the fans for voting,” the Roar skipper said.
“As a footballer, you want to test yourself against the best and this is definitely an opportunity to do so.”
The remaining fan-voted players in the Foxtel A-League All Stars 2014 squad, as well as Gombau’s four wild card picks, will be announced over the coming days.
The Foxtel A-League All Stars will assemble for a training camp in Wollongong between August 1-6 which will include a fan day and open training session (Sunday, August 3) and a training match against the Young Socceroos (Tuesday, August 5).
The glamour clash with Juventus FC will be broadcast live and exclusive across the nation on the Seven Network.
After the All Stars match, Smith and Broich will be back in Brisbane to prepare for the FFA Cup fixture against Stirling Lions on Tuesday, August 19 in Perth.
Following that Roar head up to North Queensland for the Townsville Football Cup between August 24-30.
