Farina fires up Fiji for Rio

Former Socceroos coach Frank Farina has been fine-tuning the Fiji U23s squad ahead of their maiden Olympic tournament appearance in Rio.

The football minnows have a horror draw, grouped with reigning gold medallist Mexico, Germany and South Korea.

And national team coach Farina has been pitting his squad against quality opposition in the lead up to the global showpiece.

Fiji have lost three games in their Brazil tour (4-0 to Atletico FC, 2-4 to Parana Clube 2-4 and 2-0 to FC 2-0) and will play an Atlentico Paranense academy team in their final match.

But the former A-League coach told Fiji FA Media his boys were learning a lot from the experience.

"We had good quality games on the tour," Farina said. "I hope the boys will respond well in the last match.

"It will be a different game and team altogether. It will be one of the toughest for us.

"When we come up against good opposition we learn a lot."

Fiji will represent Oceania after New Zealand were disqualified for fielding an ineligible player South African-born Deklan Wynne.
