A Bruno Fornaroli hat-trick has fired Melbourne City to a 3-0 victory over Sydney FC and within four points of the A-League summit during a dramatic night at AAMI Park.
Fornaroli struck A-League history with goals in both halves (41', 71', 81') to bring his tally for the season to 20 with five games still to play.
Sydney were unable to build on their mid-week heroics when they defeated ACL title-holders Guangzhou Evergrande and now hang by their fingertips to the top six.
The Sky Blues started strongly but the game was turned on its head in a crazy 60-seconds.
Sydney coach Graham Arnold was still complaining about the rugby challenge on goal-bound Filip Holosko, when Fornaroli rubbed salt in the wound.
Just 15 seconds after Patrick Kisnorbo escaped with a yellow for his cynical challenge City were in front.
Fornaroli twisting and turning young Sydney defender Aaron Calver, before finishing off some nice interplay with Aaron Mooy to jag the opener.
Fornaroli then combined with returning Harry Novillo for the second before completing his first hat-trick in the A-League.
The result leaves City in 4th but closing on the summit while Sydney remain in 6th, just two points above Perth Glory who are still to play.
