Fringe Socceroo Chris Herd has avoided serious injury and is expected to return to action this weekend after a hip flexor problem.
The 26-year-old suffered the injury 10 days ago when he was replaced after 19 minutes in Chesterfield’s 3-1 win over Crewe in League One.
There had been fears of a long stint on the sidelines for the injury-prone midfielder but Spireites boss Danny Wilson confirmed Herd was close to resuming.
“Chris Herd is getting closer,” Wilson said. “But he won’t be ready for (Tuesday’s clash with Blackpool).
“We’ll keep assessing him though ahead of the weekend.”
Herd is expected to return for Saturday’s league clash away to Southend United.
The Perth-born midfielder will come into calculations for Ange Postecoglou’s Socceroos squad for World Cup qualifiers later this month.
Postecoglou is expected to announce his latest squad on Tuesday next week.
Herd has enjoyed his most consistent and injury free season for years at Chesterfield, making 21 appearances in England’s third tier.
The former Aston Villa man, who has three Australia caps, hasn’t been involved with the Socceroos since withdrawing from the 2015 Asian Cup due to injury.
