Rogic & Gersbach progress in UEFA Champions League

Socceroos pair Tom Rogic and Alex Gersbach’s hopes of playing UEFA Champions League football are alive after their respective clubs progressed into the third round of qualifying overnight.

Rogic was an unused substitute as Celtic accounted for Gibraltor champions Lincoln Red Imps 3-0, having lost the first leg surprisingly 1-0.

Celtic will now face Kazak champions Astana, who reached the group stage last season, in the third qualifying round, with the winner progressing to the play-off round for a spot in the final 32.

Gersbach was also an unused substitute as Rosenborg Trondheim blew a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to Swedish champions IFK Norrkoping.

However, Rosenborg had done enough in the first leg to triumph 5-4 on aggregate and will next face Cypriot champions APOEL.

Bernie Ibini’s Club Brugge and Robbie Kruse’s Bayer Leverkusen have already qualified for the Champions League group stage.

Terry Antonis’ PAOK will enter in the third qualifying round against Dutch runners-up Ajax.
