Sydney FC have announced the signing of striker Shane Smeltz just hours after Perth Glory revealed they would not be offering the New Zealander a new deal.
Smeltz, 32, had been at the Glory for the past three seasons after signing on from former A-League outfit Gold Coast United in 2011.
"We would like to confirm that Shane Smeltz will not have his contract renewed by the Club and is pursuing other A-League options," Perth Glory revealed via Twitter.
"We would also like to thank Shane for his upmost professionalism, dedication to the Club and courage he has shown over the years. Thank-you."
The New Zealand international made over 50 appearances for the Glory, scoring 28 goals in the process.
In his first season at the club he finished the top-scorer in the A-League with 17 goals, but could only notch up seven and four in his following seasons.
In 2013-14 Smeltz was hampered by a number of injuries and was restricted to making only nine starts for the Glory.
“The decision to leave Perth Glory wasn’t an easy one, but I am confident it is the right one,’’ Smeltz wriote in his final column for The Sunday Times on Sunday.
“At 32, I’ve reached the stage of my career where every season is precious and it feels like the time is right to accept a fresh challenge and test myself again.’’
Sydney announced the Kiwi has signed a one-year deal on Sunday afternoon.
“I’m very happy to be signing for Sydney FC,” said Smeltz via a Sydney FC media release. “This is the biggest and most renown club in Australia and it will be an honour to pull on the Sky Blue shirt.
“I’m excited to get to work with Graham Arnold and to start training with the squad. I’m coming here with an expectation that we can win trophies and qualify for the Asian Champions League.
“I’m already looking forward to the season starting and I’m confident we can do well.”
The capture is Graham Arnold's second since joining the club after Sydney signed Bernie Ibini.
“Shane Smeltz is an exciting signing for the club,” said Arnold. “He brings World Cup experience to the squad as well as fantastic leadership qualities.
“His goal scoring record speaks for itself and it will be a privilege to work with Shane.”comments
