Balint named Moldova coach

CHISINAU - Former Romania international Gavril Balint signed a two-year contract as new coach of Moldova on Wednesday.

He replaces former Soviet striker Igor Dobrovolsky, who quit in October after a disappointing World Cup qualifying campaign that saw Moldova finish bottom of Group Two with no wins and three draws in 10 matches.

Balint, 47, who won the 1986 European Cup as a player with Steaua Bucharest, coached Sheriff Tiraspol to the Moldovan league title in 2003.
