BERLIN - Greece striker Fanis Gekas has agreed to join bottom-placed Hertha Berlin on loan from fellow Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen to strengthen their attack in their fight against relegation.
Gekas, who was Bundesliga top scorer in the 2006/7 season with VfL Bochum but has spent much of this season on the bench at leaders Leverkusen, will join the Berliners in January.
"We are glad that Fanis will play for us," Hertha manager Michael Preetz told the club's website on Thursday. "This is the expected reinforcement."
The speedy 29-year-old forward, who was also top scorer with 10 goals for Greece in their qualification for the 2010 World Cup, will play on loan until the end of the season with Hertha able to extend the deal by two years if they stay up.
Hertha have only won once this season and are in last place with six points from 16 games.
