Colombia can make a major statement tonight against a World Cup-inexperienced Uzbekistan side in their tournament opener.

Under Lorenzo, Colombia are a team that thrives on verticality and quick transitions - but they're not likely to get the opportunity to cut tonight's opponents to ribbons. Colombia aren't a team who care much about dominating possession for the sake of it - they want to win the ball and isolate their wingers in 1-v-1 situations against opposing full-backs.

This likely means Luis Diaz will be the key man. His ability to cut inside from the left usually leaves space for an overlapping full-back or late-arriving midfielder.

Uzbekistan vs Colombia prediction

The outcome of this match will largely depend on how long Uzbekistan's backline can handle Colombia. If the South Americans can move the ball quickly from side to side, they will eventually stretch Uzbekistan’s narrow midfield and create gaps for dangerous passes into the box, where wingers can latch onto the through balls.

Conversely, if Uzbekistan can frustrate Colombia through the opening 30 minutes and force them into taking low-percentage shots from distance, the frustration could lead to over-committing numbers forward, playing right into Uzbekistan’s probable counter-attacking plans.

Score prediction: Colombia 2–0 Uzbekistan

While Uzbekistan have the defensive discipline to keep things tight in the first half, Colombia's depth in wide areas and physical advantages on set-pieces should eventually break the deadlock as the match wears on.
