There will be even more at stake than usual when Edinburgh rivals Hearts and Hibernian lock horns this weekend, with a place in the Scottish Cup final up for grabs.
Unlike England’s top two divisions, Scottish football opted against continuing the 2019/20 season post-lockdown. Yet whereas league places were determined on a points-per-game basis, it was ruled that the remainder of the Scottish Cup would be played out when it was safe to do so. More than eight months on from their quarter-final victories, Hearts and Hibs meet in the last four on Saturday.
Hearts, who beat Rangers 1-0 in the quarters, are under new management this season, after Robbie Neilson replaced Daniel Stendel in the dugout over the summer. Now in the Championship following relegation last term, they head into the Edinburgh derby as underdogs against a Hibernian team who are currently third in the Premiership, just two points behind Celtic.
Not only do Hibernian have more quality in their ranks than Hearts, they should be in better physical shape too. The Championship campaign only began a fortnight ago, and while Hearts have only played two league games to date, Hibernian have racked up 12.
Jack Ross will be without Jamie Murphy, Drey White and Scott Allan for the short trip to Tynecastle, although all three players should make their returns in November. The fact this is a semi-final against his team’s biggest rivals will dissuade Ross from tinkering too much with his first-choice starting XI, so we can expect the visitors to field the strongest line-up possible on Saturday.
Hearts will have to make do without John Souttar, who is nursing a ruptured Achilles, but winger Josh Ginnelly could be passed fir to play despite picking up a thigh injury in the win against Arbroath last Friday.
