A day after violently attacking a supporter at World Cup 2022, Cameroon legend Samuel Eto'o has issued an apology – of sorts.

Following Brazil's 4-1 win over South Korea in the last 16 on Monday, Eto'o – who's at the tournament in his capacity as president of the Cameroonian Football Federation – was filmed aggressively approaching a man and having to be held back.

But the former Barcelona, Inter Milan and Chelsea striker broke free and kick the man to the ground outside Stadium 974, where he'd just watched Brazil – whose rotated side lost 1-0 to Cameroon in their final group game – book their place in the quarter-finals.

Eto'o has now apologised – but it's fair to say we've seen more convincing exprssions of remorse... He insinuated that the man was an Algeria fan, then launched into a rant about Algerians' supposed harassment of Cameroon supporters.

It's been an eventful World Cup in all sorts of ways, but this incident might just have trumped anything we've seen on the pitch so far for sheer bizarreness.

The altercation came after Eto'o made a particularly wild pre-tournament prediction: Cameroon and Morocco would contest an unprecedented all-African final.

And while Morocco impressively pipped 2018 runners-up Croatia to top their group, Cameroon bowed out at the first hurdle for the seventh time in eight World Cup appearances.
