The Socceroos may not have won the game but they earned plenty of respect after being edged 3-2 by European powerhouse the Netherlands in their World Cup clash at Porto Alegre on Thursday morning (Australian time).
Only hours earlier, former Socceroos coach Pim Verbeek had written off the Green and Gold, shooting down their chances of scoring against the Dutch.
But a contender for goal of the tournament - a blistering left-footed volley - reinforced Tim Cahill's credentials as one of Socceroos all-time greats. While skipper Mile Jedinak slotted home a penalty.
It was not enough to down the Dutch, however, who sealed their place into the knockout stage with goals from Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie and Memphis Depay.
A win by Chile over Spain in the subsequent match means the defending champions and Australia cannot progress past the group stage.
