10. Newcastle United vs Sydney FC (2014)

Although Sydney was outclassed 4-0 by a far superior Newcastle United side, the game was still a treat for locals. New Zealand fans of ‘The Toon’ were thrilled to see their team down under as the crowd numbers surpassed 10,000.

In another very recent game, the Hammers travelled to New Zealand for a preseason fixture against Phoenix that resulted in a shock 2-1 win for Wellington.

7. Brisbane Roar vs Celtic (2009)

Before Brisbane started their dominance of the A-League they welcomed Celtic in 2009 for a preseason friendly. The Scottish Premier League team won 3-0 at Lang Park on a Sunday afternoon.

6. Melbourne Victory vs Juventus (2008)

Before their game against the All-Stars, Juventus had previously made the trip to face Melbourne Victory at Etihad Stadium in front of more than 43,000 fans. The Italians won 4-1, which included a brace from Raffaele Palladino.

5. A-League All Stars vs Juventus (2014)

Just this year Australia was lucky enough to welcome Juventus to Sydney, bringing superstars such as Carlos Tevez, Gianluigi Buffon, Fernando Llorente, and Andrea Pirlo down under. The All-Stars lost 3-2 after two goals from Juventus in the last five minutes of the game, not a bad effort at all.

4. A-League All Stars vs Manchester United (2013)

It was the very first time the A-League All Stars would take the field, and against English juggernauts Manchester United no less. The result was pretty expected with the Red Devils taking the game 5-1 and youngster Jesse Lingard grabbing a brace.

3. Adelaide United vs Malaga CF (2014)

The first football game to be played at the new Adelaide Oval, Malaga thrashed Adelaide 5-1 in front of more than 20,000 fans. The highlight was an appearance from former Bayern Munich and Manchester City striker Roque Santa Cruz.

2. Liverpool FC vs Melbourne Victory (2013)

A monstrous 95,000 fans appeared at the MCG to watch Liverpool defeat Victory 2-0 thanks to goals from Reds captain Steven Gerrard and youngster Iago Aspas. Hearing the nearly 100,000 sing ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ was awe inspiring.

1. Sydney FC vs LA Galaxy (2007)

Many will wonder how this managed to beat the Liverpool-Victory game, but this match was absolutely groundbreaking for the A-League. LA Galaxy came to Sydney in 2007 and brought with them the King of Football, David Beckham. The game’s most famous player scored a curling free kick in front of 80,000 people while the game finished 5-3. This was a monumental event that grabbed the attention of the country, even those who weren’t fans of the game.
