Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

The week saw two Aussies recognised for their feats in the United States while others picked up silverware in Singapore and Cambodia, as more leagues across Europe got underway for the 2014-15 season.

In Round 2 of UEFA Champions League qualifying, Adrian Zahra was an unused substitute as Maltese champions Valletta bowed out of the Champions League losing to Karabakh Agdam 4-0 on the night, and 5-0 on aggregate. Both Tom Rogic and Jackson Irvine were not in the squad as Celtic FC beat KR Reykjavik 4-0. The result means Celtic advance to the third qualifying round, winning the tie by an aggregate score of 5-0.

In round 2 of UEFA Europa League qualifying, Aziz Behich played a full match for Bursaspor as they were eliminated 4-1 on penalties by Chikhura Sachkhere following two goalless legs. Oliver Bozanic started for FC Luzern but picked up a back injury and was substituted in the 15th minute as Luzern were eliminated by St Johnstone FC 5-4 on penalties. Mark Griffin was an unused substitute as Dundalk FC won 2-1 away against Hajduk Split, although the result wasn’t enough for Dundalk, who were eliminated 3-2 on aggregate. Anthony Carter was not in the squad as CFR Cluj won 1-0 against FK Jagodina to advance to Round 3.

In the opening round of the Eerste Klasse in Belgium, Matt Ryan played a full match and kept a clean sheet in Club Brugge KV’s 2-0 win over RS Waasland-Beveren.

In the 2. deild karla in Iceland, Kile Kennedy played a full match and kept a clean sheet as KF Fjarðabyggðar continued on their winning ways, beating Ægir Thorlakshofn 3-0.

In the Swiss Super League, Dario Vidosic came on in the 80th minute in FC Sion’s 1-0 win over St. Gallen. In another match, Vidosic was an unused substitute as Sion lost 1-0 to FC Aarau. Bozanic was not in the squad as FC Luzern lost 3-0 to FC Basel.

In the Prva Liga in Croatia, Steven Ugarkovic came on in the 71st minute in NK Osijek’s 2-1 loss to NK Zadar. Tomislav Mrcela did not play as NK Lokomotiva Zagreb gave up a 3-1 halftime lead to lose 4-3 to Dinamo Zagreb.

James Holland was an unused substitute as FK Austria Wien lost 4-0 to Wolfsberger AC in the Austrian Bundesliga

In the Premier Division in Ireland, Griffin was an unused substitute as table-topping Dundalk FC beat Bray Wanderers 5-1.

In the opening round of the Romanian Liga I, Anthony Carter was not in the squad as CFR Cluj recorded a convincing 4-0 win over FC Ceahlaul.

In the opening match of the 3. Liga (3rd Division) in Germany, Mustafa Amini was not in the squad as Borussia Dortmund II beat RW Erfurt 2-1.

Meanwhile in the FA Women’s Super League 1 in England, Caitlin Friend played until the 84th minute, while Danielle Brogan played until the 66th minute as Notts County LFC drew 1-1 with Arsenal LFC.

Josh Kennedy was not in the squad for either match as Nagoya Grampus drew 1-1 with Yokohama F Marinos and 3-3 with Vegalta Sendai in the Japanese J-League.

In the Nadeshiko League in Japan, Clare Polkinghorne played a full match for INAC Kobe Leonessa as they beat Iga FC Kunoichi 2-1. Elise Kellond-Knight also played a full match for Kunoichi, while Tameka Butt was an unused substitute.

In the Chinese Super League, Ha’erbin Yiteng beat Shandong Luneng 2-0, with Adam Hughes playing a full match for Ha’erbin, while Ryan McGowan did not play for Shandong. Jonas Salley played a full match as Guizhou Renhe drew 1-1 with Jiangsu Guoxin Shuntian. Daniel McBreen played for Shanghai Dongya until the 68th minute, while Josh Mitchell came on for Liaoning Hongyun in the 85th minute as the sides played out a 3-3 draw.

In the K-League in Korea, Aleksandar Jovanovic played a full match, set up the opening goal and scored the other in Jeju United’s 2-0 win Jeonnam Dragons, for whom Robbie Cornthwaite played a full match. Alex Wilkinson played a full match for Jeonbuk FC in their 0-0 draw with Ulsan Hyundai. Luke DeVere also played a full match as Gyeongnam FC lost 1-0 to Seongnam FC.

In the Thai Premier League, Brent McGrath scored two goals in Sisaket FC’s 3-2 win over Songkhla United. Earlier, McGrath played a full match in Sisaket FC’s 0-0 draw with Ratchaburi FC. Trent McClenahan, Michael Beauchamp and Matt Thompson all played full matches as PTT Rayong FC lost 1-0 to Chonburi FC. In an earlier match, the trio again all played full matches as Rayong drew 1-1 with Air Force Central. Erik Paartalu did not play due to a quad injury as Muangthong United lost 1-0 to BEC Tero Sasana and 2-1 to Bangkok Glass.

Justin Pasfield played a full match and kept a clean sheet, while Joseph Taylor was not in the squad as Tampines Rovers won the Singapore League Cup Plate Final 3-0 over Balestier Khalsa.

In the Myanmar National League, Matthew Acton played a full match as Yangon United drew 2-2 with Yadanarbon FC. Yangon is coached by Eric Williams.

In the final round of the Cambodian C-League, Adriano Pellegrino played a full match and set up a goal as league champions Phnom Penh Crown beat second-placed Boeung Ket Rubber Field 2-1.

In the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States, Samantha Kerr played a full match, Teigen Allen was an unused substitute and Lydia Williams was missing due to injury as Western New York Flash lost 4-2 to Boston Breakers. Stephanie Catley played a full match and set up a goal as Portland Thorns drew 1-1 with Washington Spirit, with Lisa De Vanna playing for Washington until the 69th minute. Emily van Egmond played until the 76th minute as Chicago Red Stars played out a goalless draw with Houston Dash. In earlier matches, Catley played a full match and set up one goal as Portland beat Boston Breakers 6-3. Caitlin Foord played a full match for Sky Blue FC while De Vanna played for Washington Spirit until the 78th minute as Sky Blue ran out 4-2 winners over Washington. Van Egmond was an unused substitute as Chicago played out a 1-1 draw with Seattle Reign.

Chloe Logarzo has won the USL W-League Rookie of the Year award, with her coach at Colorado Pride, Daniel Clitnovici, taking out the Coach of the Year award. Logarzo recorded six goals and seven assists for the Pride this season, with Clitnovici receiving great praise for leading the team to a playoff berth in their inaugural season.

In the USL Pro, Yahaya Musa played until the 60th minute while Albert Edward was an unused substitute as Wilmington Hammerheads lost 2-0 to Charlotte Eagles. In another match, Edward came on in the 65th minute, while Musa was not in the squad as Wilmington drew 0-0 with Arizona United.

In the Argentinean Qunita, Gavin de Niese came on in the 70th minute of CA River Plate’s goalless draw with Union de Santa Fe.

There have also been a host of pre-season friendly matches this week as we gear up for the 2014-15 season.

Josh Brillante made his debut for Fiorentina, playing a full match as the Italian side beat Estudiantes 1-0 in Buenos Aires in the Copa EuroAmericana, with La Viola coach Vincenzo Montella clearly impressed by his new Australian signing.

Chris Ikonomidis played a full match and scored the first and last goals as SS Lazio crushed Asiago 10-0. In another match, Ikonomidis was an unused substitute as Lazio beat Perugia Calcio 3-0. Earlier, Ikonomidis came on in the 6th minute of extra time as Lazio eventually beat AS Bari 3-2 after scores were locked at 2-2 after 90 minutes.

Cameron Burgess played a full match, while Ryan Williams played until half-time as Fulham FC beat MLS side DC United 3-0.

Chris Herd played a full match in Aston Villa’s 1-0 win over Houston Dynamo.  In another match, Herd played until half-time as Villa beat FC Dallas 2-0.

Mitch Langerak came on for Dortmund in the 46th minute and kept a clean sheet, while Mustafa Amini came on in the 73rd minute of Borussia Dortmund’s 5-1 win against RW Essen.

Robbie Kruse returned to action for Bayer Leverkusen, coming on in the 79th minute of their 1-1 draw with Alemannia Aachen.

Socceroo Mathew Leckie was in the starting eleven for FC Ingolstadt as they beat FC Nurnberg 2-1.

Rafa Jimenez played until half-time as Villareal CF Under-18 side beat Southampton FC Under-18 side 2-0.

Mile Jedinak played until the 50th minute as Crystal Palace played out a 0-0 draw with MLS side Philadelphia Union. Earlier, Jedinak played until the 51st minute as Palace drew 2-2 with another MLS outfit, Columbus Crew.

Harrison Delbridge played a full match for Sacramento Republic as they lost 3-1 to English Premier League side West Bromwich Albion.

Jackson Irvine was an unused substitute as Celtic FC lost 1-0 to German second division side FC St. Pauli.

James Meredith came on for Bradford City in the 72nd minute while Hyuga Tanner came on for Blackburn Rovers, also in the 72nd minute, as the sides played out a goalless draw. In another match, Tanner came on in the 76th minute as Blackburn drew 2-2 with Accrington Stanley.

Mitchell Austin came on in the 69th minute as Cambridge United beat Braintree Town 2-1.

Bradden Inman played until the 79th minute of Crewe Alexandra’s 1-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. In another match, Inman played a full match as Crewe lost 1-0 to Macclesfield Town.

James Wesolowski played until the 67th minute in Shrewsbury Town’s 0-0 draw with Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock FC. 

Adam Federici played a full match for Reading and kept a clean sheet while Ryan Edwards played until the 75th minute as Reading FC beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0.

Adam Sarota came on in the 63rd minute as FC Utrecht lost 3-0 to Portuguese Primeira Liga side Sporting Lisbon. 

Ben Halloran played until half-time in Fortuna Düsseldorf’s 4-1 win over English Championship side Wigan Athletic.

Eli Babalj came on in the 46th minute as AZ Alkmaar beat VVV-Venlo 2-0.

Meanwhile, Socceroo legend Tim Cahill played until the 61st minute of New York Red Bulls 1-0 win over English Premier League giants Arsenal FC.

Trent Sainsbury played until the 80th minute in PEC Zwolle’s 2-1 win against Hannover 96.

Alistair Quinn came on in the 46th minute as Dutch side for SC Telstar beat Bnei Yehuda FC 2-0.

Neil Kilkenny came on in the 46th minute for Preston North End in their 2-1 win over Morecambe FC. Earlier, Kilkenny and Bailey Wright, who was this week cleared of spot-fixing charges, played until the 69th minute as Preston won 2-1 against Halifax Town.

Brad Jones played a full match as Liverpool lost 1-0 to AS Roma to open their pre-season tour of the USA, in a match played at Boston’s historic Baseball stadium, Fenway Park.

Gethin Jones played until the 62nd minute as Everton’s U-21 side beat Wrexham FC 4-1.

Aaron Downes played a full match for Torquay in their goalless draw with Plymouth Argyle.

Massimo Luongo played until the 82nd minute in Swindon Town’s 1-0 loss to Premier League side Southampton FC.

James Demetriou came on in the 62nd minute for Nottingham Forrest’s Under 21 side as they beat Boston United 4-1.

In transfer news, English League 1 side Leyton Orient have signed former Millwall defender Shane Lowry on a two-year contract.

Now that the WC is over what happens ? Our keepers keep clean sheets (Ryan, Langerak and Federici) including Ryan 3 clean sheets in a row. On top of that Robbie Kruse returns, Trent Sainsbury returns.

Why did Ryan not do so well in the WC ? Was it beginners nerves ? Standard of opposition ? Roos defence not supporting him ? Any ideas ?
