Aussies Abroad weekend wrap
Kruse took his place on the bench for Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga following eight months on the sidelines with a knee injury. Hopefully he’ll get enough playing time under his belt and be back to his best in time for the Asian Cup in January.
As usual we kick things off in England, and firstly we take a look at the Premier League with a number of Aussies plying their trade in the top league. Mile Jedinak was in top form for Crystal Palace, scoring a goal and marshaling the back four as they beat Everton 3-2 away from home. Manchester City and Chelsea played out a 1-1 draw, however Mark Schwarzer once again missed out on selection, while Jason Davidson was also missing for West Brom as they beat Tottenham 1-0. Chris Herd didn’t make the squad for Aston Villa as they went down 3-0 to Arsenal at home and Brad Jones was an unused substitute as Liverpool went down 3-1 in a shock loss to West Ham. Curtis Good continues his recovery from injury, missing Newcastle United’s 2-2 draw with Hull City, while Alex Cisak missed the squad for Burnley’s 0-0 draw with Sunderland.
In the Championship, Scott McDonald played a full match for Millwall as they had a 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest; he also played a full match earlier in the week when Millwall went down 3-2 to Reading FC. Ryan Edwards was an unused substitute for Reading as they lost 1-0 to Sheffield Wednesday, Adam Federici missed the match due to a calf injury, Federici played the full match earlier in the week against Millwall though, while Williams came on as a 77th minute substitute. Rhys Williams is still out of action due to his Achilles injury, he missed Middlesbrough’s 4-0 demolition of Brentford FC and their 1-0 away win over Cardiff City earlier in the week. Fulham lost 1-0 to Blackburn Rovers with none of the Aussie contingent making the squad, Cameron Burgess and Ryan Williams missing out while Adam Taggart continues to struggle with a groin injury. This was also the case earlier in the week when Fulham lost 5-3 against Nottingham Forest.
In the FA Women’s Super League, Danielle Brogan played a full match as Notts County LFC beat Chelsea FC 1-0; Caitlin Friend was an unused substitute for that one.
In League One action, Brad Smith played a full match and set up a goal, while Massimo Luongo played until the 73rd minute in Swindon Town’s big 5-2 win over Sheffield United. Earlier in the week the roles were reversed as Luongo played a full match against Oldham Athletic in a 2-2 draw, Smith playing that one until the 70th minute. James Meredith played the full 90 for Bradford City as they drew 0-0 with Colchester United; earlier in the week he also played a full match as Bradford beat Milton Keynes Dons 2-1.
Bailey Wright played a full match and scored a goal for Preston North End as they beat Crawley Town 2-0, Neil Kilkenny also played a full match for PNE there, while earlier in the week Wright also got a full match against Chesterfield FC, with Kilkenny playing until the 67th minute in a 3-3 draw. Shane Lowry got two full matches under his belt for Leyton Orient, in their 2-1 win over Scunthorpe United and their 1-1 draw with Notts County. Bradden Inman missed both of Crewe Alexandria’s matches during the week.
In League Two action, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full match for Burton Albion as they went down 3-1 to Bury FC, earlier in the week he was substituted in the 65th minute as they lost 3-0 to AFC Wimbledon. James Wesolowski got two full matches during the week as Shrewsbury drew 0-0 with Newport County, and lost 1-0 to Carlisle United earlier in the week.
Aaron Downes played a full match for Torquay United in the Conference Premier, scoring a goal in their 2-0 win over Dover Athletic, earlier in the week he also played a full match as Torquay beat Woking FC 1-0. Alex Baird failed to make the squad for both of Gateshead FC’s matches during the week, the 1-1 draw with Welling United and the 1-1 draw with Macclesfield Town, Alex Grant was not in the squad for Macclesfield there. He also missed the squad for Macclesfield’s 3-0 win over Southport FC on the weekend. Joshua Riis missed both of Kidderminster Harriers matches during the week as they went down 1-0 to Grimsby Town and beat Altrincham FC 4-0. Lee Burns played two full matches during the week as Dartford went down 2-1 to Forest Green and beat Dover Athletic 2-1, while Daniel Collins was not in the squad for Wrexham FC as they beat Barnet FC 1-0.
In the Conference North, Mitchell Austin was not in the squad for the Jon Brady coached Brackley Town as they drew 0-0 with Bradford PA. In the South, Shane Huke came on in the 80th minute for Ebbsfleet United as they beat Sutton United 3-0.
In Under 21’s action, Hyuga Tanner played a full match for Blackburn Rovers, while Peter Skapetis also played a full match for Stoke City, Blackburn coming away with a 5-2 win in that one. Tanner also played 67 minutes earlier in the week as Blackburn went down 3-1 to Middlesbrough U21’s. Callum Elder was on the bench for Leicester City U21’s as they lost 5-0 to Norwich City; he came on in the 20th minute for in Leicester’s 2-0 loss to Fulham earlier in the week. Gethin Jones played a full match for Everton FC U21’s as they lost 2-0 to Chelsea, while Thomas Beadling was not in the squad for Sunderland U21’s as they went down 4-0 to Manchester United.
In PDL League action, Josh Macdonald was not in the squad for Nottingham Forest following his recent move, awaiting clearance to play, they beat Birmingham City 2-0. Aaron Lennox played a full match for Queens Park Rangers U21’s as they beat Millwall 2-1, while Tom King was not in the squad for Bristol City U21’s as they lost 2-0 to Crystal Palace. Giancarlo Gallifuoco played a full match for Swansea City U21’s; James Demetriou missed that one due to a foot injury as they lost 2-1 to Cardiff City.
Over to Germany now, and Robbie Kruse made his long awaited comeback from knee ligament damage for Bayer Leverkusen. Kruse was an unused substitute in their Bundesliga loss to Wolfsburg. Mitch Langerak was also an unused substitute for Dortmund as they lost 2-0 to FSV Mainz; Nikita Rukavytsya was not in the squad for Mainz there.
In 2. Bundesliga action, Ben Halloran was an unused substitute for Fortuna Düsseldorf as they beat 1. FC Heidenheim 3-2, while earlier in the week he was also an unused substitute as they beat 1. FC Nürnberg 2-0. Matthew Leckie played a full match for FC Ingolstadt as they drew 1-1 with TSV 1860 Munchen.
In the 3. Liga, Mustafa Amini came on in the 63rd minute for Borussia Dortmund II as they lost 2-0 to Fortuna Köln, while earlier in the week he played a full match as they lost 3-1 to Chemnitzer FC.
Brandon Chin came on in the 80th minute for FC Hennef 05 as they lost 3-1 to Viktoria Köln in the Regionalliga West, while Kwame Yeboah was an unused substitute for Borussia Mönchengladbach II as they beat Fortuna Düsseldorf II 4-1.
In the Hessenliga, Max Haubus played until the 36th minute before he needed to be substituted after dislocated his shoulder in SV Rot-Weiß Hadamar’s 0-0 draw with FC Ederbergland. Sam Gibson was not in the squad for TSV Germania Windeck as they beat SV 1914 Eilendorf 3-0 in the Mittelrheinliga.
Over to Holland, and Tommy Oar played a full match and set up the goal for FC Utrecht against FC Groningen, a match they won 1-0. Adam Sarota was not in the squad while Michael Zullo continues his rehabilitation from the torn ACL he suffered. Luke Wilkshire played a full match for Feyenoord as they went down 1-0 to rivals AFC Ajax, while Eli Babalj and Trent Sainsbury were unused substitutes for AZ Alkmaar and PEC Zwolle respectively, AZ winning that match 1-0.
In the Eerste Divisie, Alistair Quinn came on in the 75th minute for SC Telstar as they drew 1-1 with Jong Twente; Kenneth Dougall was an unused substitute for Telstar. Harry Ashcroft and Travis Cooper were not in the squad for VVV-Venlo as they beat Almere City FC 3-2. Andrew Marveggio was an unused substitute for Fortuna Sittard as they lost 2-0 to FC Eindhoven; Luke Kairies did not make the squad for Eindhoven.
In the Beloften Eredivisie, Eli Babalj played until the 83rd minute for Jong AZ Alkmaar as they lost 3-2 to Jong Vitesse/AGOVV. Andrew Marveggio got a full match under his belt for Jong Fortuna as they went down 6-4 to Jong Heracles, while Harry Ashcroft played a full match and scored a goal as Jong VVV/Helmond beat Jong ADO Den Haag 2-1, Travis Cooper playing until half time in that one.
In Italy’s Serie A, Panos Armenakas was not in the squad as Udinese beat Napoli 1-0, while Josh Brillante was also not in the squad as his Fiorentina side went down 1-0 to Atalanta.
In the Lega Pro, Liam Graham was missing from both of Aurora Pro Patria’s matches during the week with a quad injury as they drew 2-2 with Novara Calcio and lost 2-0 to Real Vicenza.
In the Youth Leagues, Chris Ikonomidis played a full match and scored the goal as Lazio Youth’s went down 2-1 to AS Bari Youth, while earlier in the week he played a full match as Lazio beat Vicenza Youth 5-1.
Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute in Gil Vicente’s 4-0 loss to Sporting Lisbon in the Primeira Liga, Portugal.
In Belgium, Mathew Ryan played a full match for Club Brugge and kept a clean sheet as they thrashed KV Kortijk 5-0 at home, while James Troisi played a full match and scored for SV Zulte Waregem as they lost 2-1 away to Sporting Charleroi.
In Turkey, Emre Balci played until the 89th minute and scored as his Diyarbakir BBSK side demolished Bandırmaspor 4-1.
Apostolis Giannou played a full match for Panionios GSS as they lost 1-0 to Panthrakikos in the Greek Super League, while Robert Stambolziev was an unused substitute for PAE Niki Volou as they lost 4-1 to Ergotelis Creta. Theo Markelis was not in the squad for PAE Veria as they lost 3-0 away from home to Olympiakos Pireus.
In Greece’s Football League 2, Giannis Simosis played until the 67th minute in Panargeiakos FC’s 1-1 draw with AO Kymi, while earlier in the week he played until the 69th minute and scored in Panargeiakos’ 5-0 win over Panarkadian.
In Austria’s Bundesliga, James Holland played a full match for FK Austria Wien as they beat RB Salzburg 3-2 away from home.
Adrian Zahra was on fire for Valletta FC in Malta’s Premier League as he scored a brace and was voted Man of the Match in a 5-0 win over Silema Wanderers.
In Switzerland, Dario Vidosic came on as a 77th minute substitute for FC Sion as they beat FC-Biel-Bienne 1-0 in the Schweizer Cup, Oliver Bozanic was an unused substitute for FC Luzern as they beat FC Schaffhausen 5-3 in Extra Time.

In Uzbekistan’s Professional Futbol Ligasi, Peter Franjić was an unused substitute as Olmaliq FK beat Mash’al Mubarek 2-1.
In Qatar’s Stars League, Mark Bresciano came on in the 62nd minute in Al Gharafa’s 1-0 win over Al Ahli.
Over in Korea, Robert Cornthwaite played until the 90th minute in Jeonnam Dragons’ 2-1 win over Busan l’Park. In the United Arab Emirates, Brett Holman played until injury time before being substituted in Al Nasr’s 3-0 win over Sharjah SC in the Arabian Gulf League, earlier in the week Holman played until the 88th minute and scored the equaliser as Al Nasr drew 1-1 with Baniyas SC.
In the MLS, Tim Cahill came on in the 58th minute and scored a goal to give NY Red Bulls a 4-1 win over Seattle Sounders, Andy Rose played a full match for Seattle. While in the CONCACAF Champions League, Cahill was not in the squad as NY Red Bulls went down 1-0 to Impact de Montreal.
In the US Open Cup Final, Andy Rose played a full match for Seattle Sounders as they won the match 3-1 in extra time to take out the title.
In the USL Pro, Harrison Delbridge was an unused substitute for Sacramento Republic as they beat LA Galaxy II 3-2 in the Semi Final.
Last up, and over in Kenya, Ian Niva was not in the squad for either of Gor Mahia’s matches during the week as they beat Chemelil Sugar 2-0 and drew 0-0 with Ulinzi Stars.
