Aussies Abroad weekend wrap

In a week of match-winning performances from the Aussies across Europe, Matthew Leckie scored an early contender for goal of the season in a 1-0 win in Germany

Massimo Luongo set up yet another goal, this time laying on the winner against Jason Davidson’s Huddersfield Town in England. Scott McDonald was the match winner in extra time for Motherwell, as he scored one and set up another to see the Steelmen through in the Scottish League Cup. Rostyn Griffiths scored the only goal of the game as Roda JC upset AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands. Brent McGrath grabbed a match-winning brace in a 2-0 win in Denmark and Richie Porta came on to score a late winner in Uruguay.

There were also goals for Tom Rogic, Aaron Downes and Tomislav Mrcela, while Elise Kellond-Knight scored in the opening round of the Women’s Bundesliga in Germany.

UK

In the English Premier League, Adam Federici was an unused substitute for AFC Bournemouth while Mark Schwarzer was also an unused substitute for Leicester City as the sides played to a 1-1 draw. Mile Jedinak was missing due to injury as Crystal Palace won 2-1 away to champions Chelsea. Curtis Good was also missing due to injury as Newcastle United lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal.

In the Championship in England, Massimo Luongo played a full match and set up the winning goal as Queens Park Rangers won 1-0 away to Huddersfield Town, for whom Jason Davidson also played a full match. Both Bailey Wright and Neil Kilkenny played full matches as Preston North End lost 2-0 away to Hull City. Rhys Williams was not in the squad for Middlesbrough FC as they won 3-1 away to Sheffield Wednesday. Adam Taggart was also not in the squad as Fulham FC won 3-1 away to Rotherham United.

In the English League One, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full match for Burton Albion as they won 1-0 away to Shrewsbury Town, for whom James Wesolowski was an unused substitute. Bradden Inman played a full match as Crewe Alexandra lost 1-0 away to Wigan Athletic. Callum Elder played a full match as Peterborough United was held to a 1-1 draw at home to Gillingham FC. James Meredith played a full match while Brad Jones was an unused substitute for Bradford City as they won 1-0 at home to Port Vale. In the second round of the League Cup in England, Federici played a full match and kept a clean sheet as Bournemouth won 4-0 away to Hartlepool United. Schwarzer played a full match as Leicester won 4-1 away to Bury FC. Both Wright and Kilkenny played full matches for Preston as they won 1-0 at home to Premier League side Watford FC. Finally in transfer news this week, Socceroo attacker Tommy Oar has found a new club, joining Ipswich Town in the English Championship. Former Perth Glory forward Daniel Da Silva has finalised a loan move from Italian side Roma to Roda JC in the Dutch Eredivisie, while Callum Elder has joined English League One side Peterborough United on a month’s loan.
