Cahill's Red Bulls clinch spot in MLS conference semis

Socceroo Tim Cahill wasn’t at his best but his New York Red Bulls progressed to the MLS Conference Semifinals after a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Sporting Kansas City on Friday morning.

Cahill faced more than two months without club football ahead of the 2015 Asian Cup if New York lost in Friday’s sudden-death match.

However, Bradley Wright-Phillips scored a double in the final quarter of an hour to help Red Bulls remarkably clinch a 2-1 victory.

Cahill was replaced in stoppage-time, after Wright-Phillips’ dramatic winner in the 90th minute.

The Socceroos all-time top scorer spurned a golden chance to score on 17 minutes, firing over the bar after pouncing on a loose ball.

The result means Cahill’s side will next face Eastern Conference table toppers DC United in a two-legged semifinal on November 2 and 8.

The games will be ideal preparation for Cahill ahead of Australia’s friendly against Japan on November 18.

Should New York progress through the semifinals, the two-legged Conference Finals will take place on November 23 and 29-30. The MLS Cup Final will scheduled for December 7.
