Cornthwaite own goal adds to Selangor's Cup woe

An own goal to Australian defender Robbie Cornthwaite contributed to a tough night for Selangor after the Red Giants were just seconds away from the Malaysian FA Cup quarter-finals.

The home side, coached by former Melbourne Victory mentor Mehmet Durakovic, held a 1-0 lead thanks to Brazilian striker Guilherme de Paula.

But that’s as good as it got for the Red Giants before a last-gasp equaliser by Terengganu’s Vincent Bikana pushed the game into extra time.

The Turtles went on to win 3-1 after Cornthwaite’s own goal (105') was followed by a third goal to Terengganu skipper Zairo Annuar Zalani (120') at the Shah Alam Stadium.

Selangor last won the cup in 2009.

Former Adelaide United star, Cornthwaite took to Twitter to express his disappointment.

The 29-year-old has made eight appearances for the Socceroos and scored three goals.
