Luongo scores the winner for QPR

Socceroo Massimo Luongo scored his first and winning goal for Queens Park Rangers with a spectacular diving header to see off Dundee United 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at the Hive Stadium overnight.

The Australian struck in the 65th minute with the scores locked at 1-1 after United’s Mario Bilate found the equaliser to Matt Phillips' first half opener.

Luongo, 22, had a chance after the restart only to see his effort swerve wide.

But there was no mistake just after the hour when Ben Gladwin headed across the goal and the Australian was on the spot, launching himself into the air from 10 yards out and heading the ball under the goalkeeper to seal the win.

Rangers manager Chis Ramsey told the club’s website the side's first friendly of the summer had been a "worthwhile exercise against a decent Dundee United side”.

"Winning games is healthy, even at this stage of pre-season, but what's more important is coming through the games unscathed, which we've done again tonight."

Luongo, a former Tottenham Hotspur and Swindon Town midfielder, ended months of speculation about his future when he signed a three-year deal with the Championship club in May.
