Socceroos get tough World Cup qualification draw

The Caltex Socceroos have drawn a difficult group as the third round of World Cup qualifiers were drawn tonight.

Socceroos fans will enjoy away days in Thailand and Japan, whilst the national team also drew difficult opponents in Middle Eastern nations the United Arab Emirates, Iraq and Saudi Arabia.

Old enemy Japan were irrepresible in the second round of qualifying, scoring 27 goals and conceding none and will again pose a speed bump for the Socceroos in their quest for qualification.

The draw took place in front of a packed house in Kuala Lumpur.

In Group B, fellow top seeds Iran drew Asian Cup finalists Korea Republic, Uzbekistan, China PR, Qatar and debutants in the third round, Syria.

The first and second placed teams in each group automatically qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, whilst the third placed team in each group will play off against each other and will face a CONCACAF qualifier in a second playoff to qualify for the World Cup.
