Victory down gritty Bayswater in FFA Cup

Melbourne Victory were made to work hard for their 2-0 win over a gritty Bayswater City SC in the FFA Cup clash at the WA Athletics Stadium in Perth on Wednesday night.

Goals to Kosta Barbarouses and veteran hitman Archie Thompson booked Victory's place in the final 16.

The A-League team had the better of the first-half with Kiwi international Barbarouses opening the scoring on 23 minutes.

Socceroo Carl Valeri and Gui Finkler displayed some good interplay, while ex-Brisbane Roar striker Besart Berisha showed he was quickly finding his feet with the Melbourne outfit.

Bayswater never looked like throwing in the towel, however, and the current WA NPL league leaders came out firing in the second-half as the lack of match fitness in the pre-season Victory legs began to tell.

The home side were unlucky not to get on the scoreboard as they forced some sharp saves from goalkeeper Nathan Coe.

But with just under 15 minutes left on the clock Thompson latched onto a ball from Berisha to kill off the tie.

Bayswater City - 0
Melbourne Victory - 2 (Barbarouses 23', Thompson 77')
