Melbourne Victory have confirmed that veteran striker Archie Thompson will miss up to three months with a knee injury.
The A-League’s all-time leading goal scorer was stretchered off late in Victory’s 3-1 FFA Cup quarter final win over inaugural Cup holders Adelaide United on Tuesday night.
But despite missing the start of the A-League season, the club was relieved to discover the injury was less serious than first thought.
After scans and a medical assessment, Thompson, 36, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Thursday afternoon.
In a statement the club said: “In positive news, it was determined that repair was required for his medial ligament.
“This type of injury usually has a recovery period of 8-12 weeks. Thompson is in good spirits and will commence rehabilitation immediately, with a view to returning to football as quickly as possible.”comments
