Virgil van Dijk suffered an ACL injury in the derby clash following a reckless challenge by Jordan Pickford, and he is expected to face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Midfielder Fabinho successfully slotted in at centre-back for the midweek 1-0 win over Ajax in the Champions League and looks set to continue in the role.
The fitness of Joel Matip and Thiago Alcantara is in doubt for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
Sheffield United picked up their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw with Fulham last weekend.
But Blades manager Chris Wilder faces several injury problems, with John Fleck, Lys Mousset, Jack O’Connell and Max Lowe unavailable.
Rhian Brewster, who departed Liverpool for Sheffield in the summer, is in line to earn his first league start for his new club.
The visitors haven’t fared well in this fixture, losing their last three Premier League meetings without scoring a single goal.
But if Klopp’s side fail to register a victory, it will be the first time they have gone three league games without a win since May 2018.
