Sheffield United will put their Premier League struggles to one side when they face Plymouth in the fourth round of the FA Cup this weekend.
It has been a season to forget in the top flight for Chris Wilder’s side, who are rooted to the foot of the table at the midway stage of the campaign. The Blades have just one win to their name so far and are already 11 points adrift of safety, leaving them with a mountain to climb over the next few months. United beat Bristol Rovers in the third round of the FA Cup and will hope that another victory here could help them build some momentum as they target an unlikely escape.
The Blades have not been outplayed too often this term, but the fine margins have tended to go against them. Relegation is beginning to look like an inevitability, but it is still far too early for Wilder to turn his full focus to the FA Cup. Even so, a place in the fifth round - a stage of the competition Sheffield United have reached only twice in the last six seasons - is well within their grasp.
Plymouth beat Sunderland on Tuesday to move into the top half of the League One table. That was their first league triumph on the road all season, and manager Ryan Lowe will hope to see his side build on that rare away win when they make the long trip to Yorkshire.
Sheffield United will have to make do without Sander Berge, Jack O’Connell and Jack Robinson. Oli McBurnie, Ben Osborn and Lys Mousset are all nursing knocks but could be passed fit in time to feature.
Plymouth will be unable to call upon the services of George Cooper and Gary Sawyer for their trip to Bramall Lane. Lowe recently announced a new policy of not discussing injury news in the build-up to games, so the Argyle boss will keep Wilder guessing until the last moment. He is likely to name a strong team following that victory over Sunderland.
