Tony Pulis is still searching for his first win as Sheffield Wednesday manager, as his new side prepare to face Reading.
Pulis oversaw a goalless draw against his former club Stoke City last time out. Prior to that the Owls drew 1-1 with Swansea, and the club’s supporters will be pleased that Pulis already appears to have tightened the team up defensively. Despite his managerial pedigree, the Welshman will be under no illusions as to the size of the task confronting him at Hillsborough. Wednesday are in the bottom three after 14 games, and avoiding relegation to League One will be the height of their ambitions following a six-point deduction.
Reading were the early pace-setters in the Championship but they have fallen away alarmingly in recent weeks. A run of four consecutive defeats was ended with a 1-1 draw against Millwall a week ago, and Reading eventually returned to winning ways with a 3-1 triumph over Bristol City on Saturday. Veljko Paunovic will be determined to keep the Royals’ unbeaten run going on Wednesday night.
Keiren Westwood could make his return to the Wednesday first team later this month, but this game has come too early for the goalkeeper. Pulis will also have to cope without Jack Marriott, Aden Flint and Cheyenne Dunkley. Reading have a few absentees of their own, with George Puscas, Felipe Araruna, Andy Yiadom and John Swift all set to miss out here.
