Asian Cup warm-up wrap: Wins to Japan, Qatar and Bahrain

Japan, Qatar and Bahrain have completed preparations for their Asian Cup campaign with morale-boosting friendly wins.

The Samurai Blue built on their comfortable 2-0 win over Auckland City with a 7-0 thrashing of the Lambton Jaffas in Newcastle.

The four-time Asian Cup winners will kick off their title defence against Group D fairytale team Palestine on Monday in Newcastle.

Meanwhile Qatar battled wild weather conditions and Team Wellington to emerge 3-1 victors in Canberra on Monday.

The Gulf Cup of Nations champions took a 2-0 lead into the break through Ibrahim Majid and Meshal Abdullah before Michael Gwyther clawed one back for the Kiwi side.

A cracking volley by Boualem Khoukhi ensured the win for Qatar who will open their Cup title bid against the UAE in Canberra on Sunday.

Fellow Group C hopefuls Bahrain continue to build nicely for their tough opener in Melbourne on Sunday against Asia’s top-ranked team, Iran, with their first back-to-back win in more than a year.

After demolishing Saudi Arabia 4-1 last week, Bahrain backed up with a 1-0 defeat of Group D aspirants Jordan  in Ballarat, which attracted thousands of spectators in the regional city.

The two teams traded chances until the 84th minute when a dazzling long range free-kick by Faouzi Aaish broke the deadlock.
