This week saw most of the major leagues around Europe kick into action with Germany and the Netherlands well stocked with Aussie talent.
We also moved into the second week of the English Premier League and saw a number of Aussies in action in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
Premier League action continued with match day 2 and Mark Schwarzer was not in the squad for Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Leicester, much the same as the opening weekend when he missed out against Burnley. Curtis Good didn’t make the squad for Newcastle United, while Chris Herd also didn’t make the cut for Aston Villa in their 0-0 draw. Jason Davidson came on as a substitute for West Brom in their 0-0 draw with Southampton, while Mile Jedinak played the full game for Crystal Palace as they went down 3-1 to West Ham. Alex Cisak missed the squad for both of Burnley’s matches this week, their 1-0 loss to Swansea and their 3-1 loss to Chelsea earlier in the week.
In round four of the English Championship, Scott McDonald played the full 90 minutes as Millwall went down 1-0 to Rotherham United. He also played earlier in the week in their 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday. Rhys Williams didn’t play for Middlesbrough as he recovers from that ruptured Achilles he suffered in January, missing the match against Sheffield Wednesday and the match earlier in the week against Bolton Wanderers. Adam Federici played the full 90 minutes and Ryan Edwards was substituted after 61 minutes in Reading’s 4-0 loss away to Nottingham Forest. Federici also played the full match against Huddersfield Town earlier in the week with Edwards an unused substitute. Cameron Burgess and Ryan Williams played the full 90 minutes as Fulham were thumped 5-1 by Derby County. Williams also played the full 90 minutes in Fulham’s earlier match where they were beaten 1-0 by Wolverhampton. Adam Taggart was missing from both of Fulham’s matches due to injury.
Match day four of English League One also saw some Aussies in action. Bailey Wright played most of the match for Preston North End as they beat Oldham Athletic 1-0 – he was substituted in the 84th minute. Neil Kilkenny was an unused substitute in that match. Both played the full match when Preston drew 1-1 with Doncaster Rovers earlier in the week. Brad Smith played 82 minutes for Swindon Town with Massimo Luongo missing the squad entirely as they beat Crewe Alexandria 1-0. Bradden Inman came on for Crewe after 84 minutes. Smith also played a full match earlier in the week as Swindon Town drew 2-2 with Gillingham. Luongo also played on that occasion and was substituted in the 83rd minute. Inman was an unused substitute when Crewe Alexandria went down 5-2 to Rochdale earlier in the week. Shane Lowry was an unused substitute for both of Leyton Orient’s matches this past week, while James Meredith came on as a sub in the 55th minute in Bradford City’s 1-0 loss to Peterborough. He was an unused sub earlier in the week against Crawley Town.
In English League Two Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played the full 90 minutes in both of Burton Albion’s matches this past week – their 1-0 loss to Newport County and their 1-0 win over Exeter City earlier in the week. James Wesolowski played the full match as Shrewsbury Town drew 0-0 with Northampton Town, and played 75 minutes before being substituted in their 4-0 win over Accrington Stanley.
In the Conference Premier, Daniel Collins was not in the squad for Wrexham, neither was Joshua Riis for Kidderminster Harriers. Alex Baird played the full 90 minutes as Gateshead FC went down 6-1 to Grimsby Town, Aaron Downes played the full match for Torquay in their 0-0 draw with Dartford FC, while Lee Burns was not in the squad for Dartford. Conference North saw Brackley Town coach Jon Brady lose 2-1 to Leamington FC, Mitchell Austin was not in the squad for Brackley. Shane Huke was an unused substitute in the Conference South with his side Ebbsfleet United going down 1-0 to Whitehawk FC.
In the FA Women’s Super League 1, Danielle Brogan played the full match for Notts County LFC and Caitlin Friend was substituted in the 57th minute as they went down 1-0 to Liverpool LFC.
Plenty of action in the English Under 21 leagues too with Bradden Inman starting and scoring twice for Crewe Alexandria in their 4-2 win over Brentford in the PDL League 2, North Division. James Demetriou was not in the squad for Nottingham Forest U21s as they lost 2-1 to Charlton Athletic, Aaron Lennox was an unused substitute in QPR’s 1-1 draw with Birmingham City’s U21’s, and Tom Kind was not in the squad for Bristol City U21’s against Huddersfield Town U21s. Thomas Beadling was not in the squad as Sunderland lost 1-0 to Liverpool FC’s U21s in U21 Premier League, Division 1. Gethin Jones set up a goal and played the full match as Everton FC U21s defeated Leicester City 3-2, while Callum Elder and Robbie Paratore were not in the squad for Leicester.
In U21 Premier League, Division 2, Hyuga Tanner was not in the squad for Blackburn Rovers U21’s as they won 2-0 against Brighton & Hove Albion U21s. Chris Herd played 63 minutes before being substituted for Aston Villa U21s against Stoke City U21s, Jordan Lyden and Thomas Strain were not in the squad. Peter Skapetis was an unused substitute for Stoke City, while Alex Grant was not in the squad.
The Bundesliga got underway at the weekend and Mitch Langerak played the full match as Borussia Dortmund went down 2-0 to Bayer Leverkusen. Robbie Kruse was not in the squad for Leverkusen. Nikita Rukavytsya was not in the squad for FSV Mainz as they drew 2-2 with SC Paderborn 07.
In the 2. Bundesliga, Mathew Leckie played 90 minutes scored a goal (62’) and set up another (81’) as FC Ingolstadt 04 defeated Greuther Furth 2-0 in the Bavarian derby. Ben Halloran played the first half of Fortuna Dusseldorf’s 2-0 loss to Karlsruher SC.Mustafa Amini was an unused substitute as Borussia Dortmund II drew 0-0 with Sonnenhif Großaspach in the 3. Bundesliga.
In round one of the DFB-Pokal, Leckie was not in the squad for FC Ingolstadt 04 when lost 4-2 against Kickers Offenback.
In round four of the Regionalliga West in Germany, Kwame Yeboah was an unused substitute for Borussia Monchengladbach II in their 1-0 win over Sportfreunde Siegen, while in the Bayernliga Sud, Jonathan Faerber was not in the squad as TSV 1860 Rosenheim beat FC Bad Kotzting 2-1.
Off to the Netherlands, and Trent Sainsbury came on after 80 minutes in PEC Zwolle’s 2-1 win over Vitesse Arnhem in the Eredivisie. Tommy Oar played the full match for Utrecht and set up both goals in the 2-1 win over Feyenoord, Luke Wilkshire played the full match for Feyenoord. Adam Sarota was an unused substitute and Michael Zullo was not in the squad for Utrecht as he recovers from a ruptured ACL. Eli Babalj was not in the squad for AZ Alkmaar as they lost 3-0 to Willem II Tilburg, while Andrew Marveggio was an unused substitute for Fortuna Sittard in their match against NEC Nijmegen.
In the Eerste Divisie, Harry Ascroft was an unused substitute while Travis Cooper was not in the squad for VVV-Venlo in their 1-0 win over De Graafschap. Alistair Quinn and Kenneth Dougall were unused substitutes in SC Telstar’s win over Achilles ’29.
In the Beloften Eredivisie, Andrew Marveggio scored twice for Jong Fortuna, while Eli Babalj scored twice for Jong AZ Alkmaar. Jong AZ Alkmaar won the match 5-2.
In Scotland, Tom Rogic was missing due to injury for Celtic FC in the Scottish Premier League as they went down 1-0 to Iverness CT, while Jackson Irvine was also not in the squad as he played the full match for Celtic’s youth team in the Development League, where they drew 2-2 with Dundee United.
In the Primeira Liga in Portugal, Caleb Patterson-Sewell was an unused substitute as Gil Vicente went down 2-0 to Vitoria Setubal.
Mathew Ryan played a full match for Club Brugge KV in their 3-1 loss to KV Mechelen in the Eerste Klasse, Belgium.
In Russia, former Brisbane Roar winger Ivan Franjic did not make the squad for FK Torpedo Moskva as they lost 3-0 to FK Krasnodar.
Theo Markelis was not in the squad for PAE Veria in Greece’s Superleague, as they won 3-2 over SKODA Xanthi. While Robert Stambolziev also did not make the squad for PAE Niki Volou as they went down 3-1 against Olympiakos Pireus.
In Switzerland, Oliver Bozanic was not in the squad for FC Luzern as they won 9-0 against FC Konolfingen in the Schweizer Cup, while Dario Vidosic was an unused substitute for Sion against FC La Chaux-de-Fonds.
Steven Ugarkovic played 56 minutes for NK Osijek in their 2-0 win over Hajduk Split in Croatia’s Prva Liga. Tomislav Mrcela played the full match for NK Lokomotiva Zagreb in a 2-1 win, while Roko Strika was not in the squad for NK Zagreb as they drew 1-1 with Dinamo Zagreb. Frane Vladislavic was not in the squad for NK Istra as they drew 1-1 with NK Zadar earlier in the weekend.
In Austria’s Bundesliga, James Holland played a full match for FK Austria Wien as they drew 2-2 with SK Rapid Wien.
Eliza Campbell played the full match for Medkila IL as they were defeated 7-1 by Arna-Bjornar in Norway’s Toppserien.
In Iceland, Kile Kennedy played a full match for KF Fjarðabyggðar in their 3-2 win over ÍF Grotta.
In the Maltese Premier League, Charlie Fuller and Jordan Nadalin were both missing from the squad as Balzan Youths drew 1-1 with Naxxar Lions, while Adrian Zahra was an unused substitute for Valletta FC as they drew 0-0 with Tarxien Rainbows.
The FAI Cup Round of 16 played out in Ireland over the weekend, with Mark Griffin coming on as a 75th minute substitute for Dundalk in their 2-1 win over Galway FC. In the Premier Division, he was an unused substitute as Dandalk drew 1-1 with Sligo Rovers.
In Romania, Anthony Carter was not in the squad as CFR Cluj won 2-0 over FC Viitorul Constanţa in the Liga 1.
UEFA Champions League qualifiers played out midweek with Luke Wilkshire playing 82 minutes and setting up a goal for Feyenoord against Lugansk as they drew 1-1. Trent Sainsbury played the full match for PEC Zwolle in their 1-1 draw against AC Sparta Praha, while Mathew Ryan played a full match in Club Brugge’s 2-1 win over Grasshoppers. Tom Rogic and Jackson Irvine missed Celtic’s 1-1 draw with NK Maribor, while Robbie Kruse also missed the squad for Leverkusen in their 3-2 win over FC Kobenhavn.
Over to Asia, and in Korea’s K-League, Robert Cornthwaite was not in the squad for Jeonnam Dragons as they beat Busan I’Park 1-0, while Aleksander Jovanovic played the full match for Jeju United in their 0-0 draw with Incheon United. Alex Wilkinson played a full match for Jeonbuk FC in their 2-1 win over FC Seoul and Luke De Vere played 55 minutes for Gyeongnam FC in their 0-0 draw with Pohang Steelers.
In China, Jonas Salley played a full match for Guìzhou Renhe in their 3-1 win over Henan Jianye in the Chinese Super League. Earlier in the week he played a full match as Guìzhou Renhe lost 2-1 to Beijing Guoan. Josh Mitchell played the full 90 minutes for Liaoning Hongyun in their 2-1 win over Tianjin Taida, while Daniel McBreen sat out Shanghai Dongya’s 2-0 win over Dalian A’erbin due to suspension and Ryan McGowan came on in the second half in Shandang Luneng’s 2-2 draw with Beijing Guoan.
In the Thai Premier League, Brent McGrath came on in the second half in Sisaket FC’s 2-0 loss to Suphanburi FC, he also came on in the second half in their 1-0 loss to Samut Songkhram earlier in the week. Erik Paartalu was not in the squad for Muangthong United in their 2-0 loss to Chonburi FC, while earlier in the week he was an unused substitute against Buriram United in a 1-0 loss. Michael Beauchamp and Matthew Thompson played a full match for PTT Rayong against Chainat FC in a 2-0 win, with Trent McClenahan not in the squad. Earlier in the week, Beauchamp played the full 90 minutes and scored for PTT Rayong as they drew 2-2 with Bangkok United, McClenahan and Thompson did not take part in that match.
In Myanmar, Matthew Acton played a full match and kept a clean sheet for the Eric Williams coached Yangon United when they won 1-0 against Nay Pyi, while earlier in the week Acton played the full 90 minutes in a 4-2 win over Zwekapin.
In the Piala Malaysia, Ndumba Makeche came on as a substitute in the 75th minute in Felda United’s 3-2 win over Pahang FA, earlier in the week he played 80 minutes and set up a goal in Felda United’s 3-2 win over Johor Darul Takzim. Mario Karlovic played a full match for Terengganu FA v Perak FA, where he was on the right end of a 2-1 win, he also played the full 90 minutes and scored against Kedah FA earlier in the week. Ryan Griffiths played the full match for Sarawak FA and scored a goal against Kedah FA, his brother Adam Griffiths was an unused substitute for Kedah. Earlier in the week, Ryan played a full match for Sarawak FA in a 2-0 win over Perak FA, while Adam played a full match against Terengganu FA and scored with his side going down 3-2. Spase Dilevski was not in the squad for ATM FA as they went down 3-0 to Kelantan FA, he also missed ATM’s earlier match against Darul Takzim, a 0-0 draw. Steve Pantelidis, played a full match for the Mehmet Durakovic coached Selangor FA, who beat Sime Darby 2-0. Earlier in the week Pantelidis played a full match as Selangor lost 2-0 to PDRM FA. Goran Subara was on the bench for T-Team FC as they lost 4-1 against PDRM FA.
In Indonesia, Michael Baird came on for the final 8 minutes as PSM Makasser won 3-1 against Persela Lamongan, while earlier in the week he played the first 66 minutes in a 1-0 win over Persepam Madura United. Abu Bakar Sillah was not in the squad for Persepam.
In the J-League, Josh Kennedy played 71 minutes before being substituted in Nagoya Grampus’ 1-1 draw with Kashiwa Reysol. He was not in the squad for their match earlier in the week, a 4-0 win over Kyoto Sanga in the third round of the Emperor’s Cup.
Mark Bresciano played a full match for Al Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League as they beat Umm Salal SC 1-0.
Justin Pasfield played a full match for Tampines Rovers in the Singapore S-League, they lost 1-0 to Tanjong Pagar United. Joseph Taylor was not in the squad for Tampines in that match.
In the Maldives Dhivehi League, Dane Milovanovic played 31 minutes for New Radiant SC, they won 3-1 against Club Valencia.
Over to South America, and Gavin de Niese played the first 60 minutes before being substituted in River Plate’s 1-0 win over CA Banfield in the Quinta. In the Copa Sudamericana, Richard Porta was not in the squad for Independiente as they won 1-0 over Trujillanos FC.
In Major League Soccer action, Tim Cahill played the first 69 minutes against Montreal Impact as New York Red Bulls had a 4-2 win. Andy Rose played a full match for the Seattle Sounders in a 1-1 draw with San Jose Earthquake earlier in the week.
In the USL Pro, Yahaha Musa and Albert Edward both missed the squad for Wilmington Hammerheads matches, a 2-1 win over Orange County Blues, and a 3-3 draw with LA Galaxy (R) earlier in the week. They also missed the Hammerheads match against Sacremento Republic at the beginning of last week, Harrison Delbridge was an unused substitute for the Sacremento Republic in a 2-0 win, he came on in the 74th minute for their 6-1 win over Orange County Blues.
In the National Women’s Soccer League, Katrina Gorry came on for Kansas at the death, while Stephanie Catley played the full 90 minutes for Portland as Kansas won the semi-final 2-0. Earlier in the week, Catley missed Portland’s 1-0 win over Seattle Reign due to an ankle injury. In a rearranged round 13 match, Caitlin Foord played a full match for Sky Blue FC in a 1-0 win over Houston Dash.
Over in Kenya, Ian Niva came on in the 58th minute for Gor Mahia FC in their 1-0 win over SoNy Sugar FC in the Kenyan Premier League.1 comment
