Wellington Phoenix v Central Coast: Player Ratings

Wellington Phoenix and Central Coast did battle in Auckland, with honours even after a 1-1 draw and FourFourTwo's James Hetherington watched it all and provides his player ratings.

Wellington Phoenix

Roy Krishna                                                 8.0

Krishna was absolutely phenomenal today. He constantly found himself in the box and taking on the keeper. Got a deserved goal in the 76th minute with a neat finish too.

Nathan Burns                                               6.5

Burns first half was on par with his usual quality, offering great linkup play and sending teammates through on goal. His second half however was lacking and he looked tired.

Michael McGlinchey                                   7.0

Apart from a few scuffed shots McGlinchey brought a lot today and provided the killer pass for Krishna’s equaliser.

Roly Bonevacia                                            6.5

Missed a great chance in the 23rd minute but really improved in the second half making some good plays up front.

Alex ‘Rodriguez’ Gorrin                            7.0

Passing was exceptional and controlled the midfield. Managed a huge 82 accurate passes and three shots for good measure.

Albert Riera                                                 7.0

Limited his runs forward, but that’s really what you want from the holding midfielder. Was dominant in duels and tackles and distributed the ball very well.

Manny Muscat                                              6.5

Was solid when defending and created a huge chance for Krishna in the 52nd minute.

Andrew Durante                                          5.5

Was outmuscled by Simon for the opening goal and seemed to be overly frustrated throughout the game with the Mariners striker.

Ben Sigmund                                                6.0

Like Durante, Sigmund was feeling the physical effects of Simon and seemed to be getting worn out by verbal altercations.

Louis Fenton                                                            6.5

Provided some great crosses into the box going forward and was decent at the back.

Glen Moss                                                     5.0

Made a great save in the 59th minute and was good with freekicks, but his gaff from Fitzgerald’s strike gifted Simon the opener and cost the team three points.

Central Coast Mariners

Matt Simon                                                   7.5

Apart from a few rash tackles (which saw him rightfully yellow carded), Simon was a constant pest as he applied physical play with a few words to really give Durante and Sigmund a tough day.  His reaction time for the goal was brilliant.

Nick Fitzgerald                                            7.0

Fitzgerald’s audacity to take the long shot resulted in the goal while he spent the rest of the game tackling to perfection.

Anthony Caceres                                           6.0

Passing efficiency saved Cacers from a subpar day as he failed to really demand your attention.

Richard Vernes                                           6.5

Was really positive going forward but lacked that final piece of skill to get into the box. A poor tackle in the 73rd minute earned him a yellow.

John Hutchinson                                         6.0

Passing was quite good but the Phoenix midfield controlled the centre today and Hutchinson suffered from that.

Nick Montgomery                                       N/A

Subbed off in the 21st minute.

Michael Neill                                                            6.5

Shut down Fenton well early and was great going forward.

Joshua Rose                                                  6.5

Was strong and consistent in the centre of defense.

Zachary Anderson                                      6.0

Dealt with Krishna well in the 36th minute but was subbed off at half time.

Jacob Poscoliero                                         7.0

The Mariners best defender by far, Poscoliero had the challenged of shutting down Krishna. While he wasn’t able to fully he still made several vital interceptions that ultimately saved the Mariners two points.

Liam Reddy                                                  7.0

Was constantly under pressure and made several great saves (one on one with Burns in the 36th minute for example). Not a lot he could have done about the goal.

Matthew Sim                                                            6.0

Was much more of a spark than Anderson but lost Krishna behind him to concede the goal.

Glen Trifiro                                                  6.5

Had to come on very early for Montgomery and was straight into action with a free kick in the 25th minute.  Created three more chances throughout the day.

Josh Bingham                                               N/A
