Many believe that Belgium have underachieved, given the talent they possess, especially after their painful group-stage exit four years ago in Qatar.
Similarly, Egypt have failed to live up to expectations, and went without a win during the 2018 World Cup group stage before failing even qualifying in 2022.
Despite finishing top of their qualifying group, Belgium were somewhat unconvincing as they were held to draws by Kazakhstan and North Macedonia, twice. However, they did excel in the recent friendlies, beating Croatia 2-0 and putting five past Tunisia.
Egypt were far more convincing in reaching the tournament, winning eight and drawing two of their 10 qualifiers. They also conceded just two goals. Yet manager Hossam Hassan is under real pressure to release Mo Salah and Omar Marmoush, instead of relying on dour, obdurate displays.

Belgium vs Egypt: World Cup 2026 Preview
For the best part of a decade, Belgium were considered one of the best sides in world football. But in recent years there have been some high-profile retirements and golden generation's era has begun to fade.
Despite this, the current squad still has three players who helped the Red Devils top the FIFA rankings. Thibaut Courtois, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku have all travelled to North America and will be desperate to help their country replicate the success of 2018 when they finished third.
However, head coach Rudi Garcia has been keen to promote the next generation of talent and will be looking to Manchester City’s Jeremy Doku and Atalanta forward Charles De Ketelaere to fire them to victory over Egypt as they bid to finish top of the group.
When it comes to Egypt, history stands against them. The Pharaohs have failed to win a single World Cup game in seven previous attempts, losing all three games back in 2018.
This time around, though, there is a belief that they can break their duck and progress beyond the group stage. Much of that conviction comes from the fact they have an all-time great on the pitch.
The legendary figure of Mohamed Salah provides some much-needed cutting edge in attack, while Omar Marmoush will also be desperate to impress after a frustrating season with Manchester City.

FourFourTwo's prediction
Belgium 1-1 Egypt
Egypt’s long wait for a World Cup win may well continue in what is likely to be a cagey affair in Seattle.
