After a chaotic opening night, Czechia and South Africa know that a second successive defeat at the World Cup 2026 will be catastrophic for their chances of reaching the knockouts.

All of a sudden, one of Group A's middle matches represents very serious business indeed. It's a must-win.

Czechia vs South Africa: key information

The tournament started with defeats for both Czechia and South Africa in Mexico. Bafana Bafana went down 2-0 (but 'won' the red card count 2-1) against the co-hosts at the Azteca and the Czechs let a lead to slip to fall 2-1 to South Korea in Guadalajara. Progression could come down to this game.

Both of these nations are desperate to extend their stay at a first World Cup for a generation. Czechia last qualified in 2006, South Africa appeared in 2010 as hosts.

Plan A will have been nicking something on day one. Plan B is to win this.

Czechia vs South Africa: World Cup 2026 Preview

South Africa kicked off the tournament in the glare of the floodlights at the famous Estadio Azteca, where Mexico were just a little more ruthless where it counted.

Goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez killed off Bafana Bafana hopes but it was the performance of Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio that most caught the eye in Mexico City.

The individual decisions weren't shockers but three players were shown straight red cards in the first game of the tournament. South Africa will be without suspended duo Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane against Czechia.

Czechia and head coach Miroslav Koubek must be kicking themselves after losing a match they led until the middle of the second half against South Korea.

Captain Ladislav Krejci put them in front on the hour but Hwang In-beom levelled the score in the shadow of the second-half hydration break and substitute Oh Hyeon-gyu, formerly of Celtic and now playing for Besiktas in Turkiye, bagged a winner 10 minutes from time.

With zero points between them and either three or four required, neither team can afford to give up any more ground when they meet at Mercedes-Benz Stadium today.

FourFourTwo's prediction

Czechia 1-1 South Africa

On the evidence of opening night, there's little to suggest either of these teams has enough to take the game away from the other, FourFourTwo predicts.
