Crystal Palace will renew hostilities with arch-rivals Brighton at Selhurst Park on Sunday, with both teams in need of a win after disappointing results last time out.
Palace held their own in the first half of their meeting with Chelsea before the international week, only to crumble after half-time as Frank Lampard’s side ran out 4-0 winners.
That result followed on from a 2-1 defeat by Everton the week prior, leaving Palace stuck on six points after their early-season conquests of Southampton and Manchester United.
Brighton will feel their performances haven’t been appropriately rewarded so far in 2020/21. They were arguably the better team against both Chelsea and Manchester United, yet were still defeated by the two big-six juggernauts.
Graham Potter could have fewer complaints after a 4-2 loss to Everton a fortnight ago, but three points is scant recompense given the strength of Brighton’s displays to date.
Scoring goals hasn’t been a problem for the Seagulls, who have made the net bulge eight times already this term. Their failure to keep opponents out at the other end will worry Potter, though: only four teams have conceded more goals than Brighton so far.
In fairness to Albion, the fixture list hasn’t been particularly kind up to now. With Tottenham and Liverpool on the horizon, Sunday’s showdown at Selhurst is important for reasons beyond bragging rights.
Palace will be content to allow their opponents a large share of possession, just as they did in a 1-1 draw in the corresponding fixture last season.
James McCarthy’s chances of involvement are rated at 50-50, but Roy Hodgson remains without Jeff Schlupp, Nathan Ferguson, Patrick van Aanholt, James Tomkins and Gary Cahill.
Davy Propper is closing in on a return to action for Brighton, but this game will probably come too soon for the midfielder. Tariq Lamptey, who’s enjoyed a fantastic start to the season at right wing-back, looks to have shaken off a tight hamstring in time to feature.
