Stoke could climb into the Championship play-off places with victory over Nottingham Forest on Tuesday.
The Potters were held to a 0-0 draw by Coventry on Boxing Day, leaving them just outside the top six ahead of their final match of 2020. Stoke have lost just one of their last eight games and have become a much more solid team in recent weeks, having now kept four clean sheets on the bounce. In fact, Michael O’Neill’s man have conceded only one goal in their last eight fixtures, and it is their defensive resolve that has seen them climb into the play-off picture. However, their two most recent defeats both came at the Bet365 Stadium, so a home win is far from certain on Tuesday night.
Chris Hughton has now been in charge of Forest for almost three months, but considerable problems remain at the City Ground. They have now gone three games unbeaten following a Boxing Day draw with Birmingham, but Forest are only two points clear of the drop zone and have won just one of their last 10 league encounters. Hughton has yet to strike the right balance between attack and defence, although he will be pleased with the solidity his side have shown in their last three outings.
Stoke will again have to make do without Morgan Fox, who will be out for another two or three weeks with a hamstring problem. Tyrese Campbell will not play again this season, while Angus Gunn and Adam Davies are not yet ready to return. Joe Allen will begin the match on the bench following his long-awaited comeback from an Achilles injury.
Forest will not be able to call upon Scott McKenna until next weekend at the earliest, while Luke Freeman also looks set to miss out with an ankle problem. Joe Lolley and Anthony Knockaert are both pushing for recalls as Forest seek their first away win since October.
