Pics: Dodgy knees, big hearts

It was a case of dodgy knees and big hearts when a host of retired football stars gathered for a unique celebrity 'fun-raiser' at Hensley Athletic Field, Sydney on the weekend.

The pro-am style match pit the Lucas Neill XI coached by Alex Robertson against the Paul Wade XI coached by John Kosmina.

Adding to the blast from the past was Steve Corica, David Zdrilic and Zeljko ‘Spider’ Kalac – showing off some impressive outfield moves – as well as Nick Rizzo, Ante Alilovic, Mark Robertson and Scottish international Gavin Rae among others.

FoxSports commentator Simon Hill got out from behind the microphone to express his pitch prowess while a host of enthusiastic amateurs aged 17 to 62 also joined the fray.

There was plenty of off-field banter along the lines of ‘spot the ex-Socceroo’ but the real business of Saturday's Celebrity Football Charity Challenge was raising money for Epilepsy Australia – with more than $60,000 donated by the end of the day.

FIFA whistle-blower Matthew Breeze kept things moving with the assistance of World Cup veteran Richard Lorenc as 4th official.

As for the players – their legs had lost some pace but there was nothing retiring about their moves with Kalac proving a handful up front for the Wade XI who finished 4-3 victors courtesy of a hat-trick from Zdrilic and a hat-full of assists from the side’s MoM, Corica.

While former Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Socceroo Nick Rizzo starred for the vanquished.

Event patrons were former Socceroo captains Lucas Neill and Epilepsy Australia Ambassador – Paul Wade.  Wade continues to live with epilepsy and work for community awareness.

Supported by Eastern Suburbs Football Association (ESFA) in association with their community partner Sydney FC and corporate partner Chapman Eastway, donations can still be made at www.charityfootball.com.au
