Football, a Socceroo legend and Walt Disney World – it doesn’t get any better than that for 20 lucky Aussie kids.
Two talented under 12s teams have been chosen to compete at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World, Florida.
The players from Townsville, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast flew out for Orlando on Thursday to take part in the 2014 Disney Cup International football tournament.
Their journey began when Foxtel, Disney XD and Socceroo hero Tim Cahill began looking for the next generation of footballers to play for the Foxtel All-Stars.
Cahill, Australia’s all-time leading goal scorer, and his team of professional coaches, led by Robbie Anderson from the Everton FC Academy, selected trained the teams.
“This is a brilliant new initiative that continues the academies I have been running with Foxtel around Australia over the last year”, Cahill said.
“To join with Disney and this huge competition is very exciting and gives even more kids around Australia an opportunity to follow their dreams and play the great world game.
“I am excited to be able to help children fulfil their dreams - to be able to give hope and opportunities to grassroots football in a once in a lifetime experience they will remember forever.”
From hundreds of entries 50 boys and 50 girls were chosen to participate in a special Gala Day trial event at Sydney’s Darling Harbour in May.
Following the day-long trial, 10 boys and 10 girls were chosen to participate in the international competition.
Coaches and all 20 players (each accompanied by a parent or guardian) will stay at Walt Disney World and compete in the tournament held in the world-class facilities of the ESPN.
Over the past 15 years the Disney Cup International has attracted teams from more than 20 countries and now it’s Australia’s turn to show what the country’s young footballers can achieve.
The teams will participate in a two-day training camp before joining other competitors from around the world at the official tournament opening party where they will watch the FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday July 13.
The tournament kicks off on Monday July 14.
You can follow their journey on the Foxtel Facebook and Twitter pages as they compete with teams from Brazil, Mexico, and Honduras just to name a few.
