Captain Regan rallies Jets: We want our pride back

A fired up Taylor Regan will wear the armband when Newcastle Jets take on defending champions Brisbane Roar at Hunter Stadium on Friday.

Regan replaces sacked skipper – Kew Jaliens – one of five senior players shown the door under owner Nathan Tinkler’s new hands-on approach.

The club also parted ways with experienced attacker, Jeronimo Neumann, on Wednesday.

Coach Phil Stubbins spoke with the 26-year-old defender after training on Thursday about his new role captaining his hometown club.

“Obviously it’s an honour to wear the armband for the Jets and with this group of players,” Regan told media afterwards.

“To be captain in front of my home fans and my family, and for the team that I grew up supporting is important to me.”

Stubbins has named a line-up including four new signings, with South Korean Lee Ki-Je's availability subject to visa approval.

The Jets are sitting just one from the bottom of the league ladder and will try to bounce back from a 7-0 mauling away to Adelaide United in their last outing.

But Regan, who started in the Jets youth ranks in 2008, said he was confident the side would deliver a performance against Roar that would make home fans proud.

“No one is hiding the fact that we’ve lost some key members of our squad, but we must move on and play for the community and town and make them proud of us again,” he said.

“Over the last few weeks and months there has probably been a bit of pride lost. We want to get that back.

“Having ability is one thing, but I think it’s important that a team reflects its community in the way that we play. We’re determined to roll our sleeves up and get stuck in no matter the situation.

“We’re clear on our roles and we have to stick to them,” he said

“We need to put in a good showing for our loyal supporters.”
