Djite: Premiership on Reds' radar

Bruce Djite says the Premiership is most definitely on Adelaide United’s radar after their drought-breaking win over Melbourne Victory on Friday night.

The Reds beat their fierce Melbourne rivals for the first time in nine attempts thanks to Bruce Kamau’s last minute strike handing them a 1-0 win at AAMI Park.

Outright last and without a win three months ago, Gui Amor’s side is now unbeaten in 12 games and in third spot, just two points behind league-leaders Brisbane who are yet to play this weekend.

Adelaide Kamau and conquer Victory

Asked if they are starting to believe they can win the Premiers’ Plate, Djite told Fox Sports: “It’s on our radar definitely.

“About a month or so ago we thought we’d make a statement by winning a few games on the trot and we’ve managed to do that.

“Now we’re undefeated in 12 and we’re looking ahead of us instead of behind us now. We’ve made a little gap between us and Victory and we’re looking forward to Brisbane next week.”

The win was extra special for defender Tarek Elrich, who had never beaten Victory in a competitive game for the Reds.

He praised the never-say-die spirit and impact of the substitutes – including Kamau – for inspiring them to a vital three points.

“To win it like that shows the character of the team to work hard for the 90 minutes. They made it hard for us but credit to the boys that came on, they made the difference at the end,” he said.

“I don’t think anyone thought we could go 12 games unbeaten…hopefully we can keep this run going. It’s a good time to be a part of the Reds.

“It’s been an unreal ride, we all believe in each other, believe in what the coach is trying to achieve and its finally paying off.”

The winning goal was created by a superb run by Craig Goodwin, with Stefan Mauk also involved producing a clever pass to Kamau.

And the youngster did the rest, hitting a shot which deflected off Scott Galloway before beating Danny Vukovic at his near post for Kamau’s first A-League goal.

“It’s great to score and even better for it to be in this fixture,” he said.

“Especially at this time of the season when points are crucial. It’s great to get on the scoresheet.”
