Arnold off to a winning start at Sydney

Graham Arnold got his tenure at Sydney FC off to a winning start with the Sky Blues securing a comfortable 5-1 victory over the Macarthur Rams on Wednesday night.

Arnold watched on as a brace from Corey Gameiro (33', 38'), plus goals from Nick Carle (58'), youngster Bai Antoniou (87') and an own goal from Louis Duchesne (19') handed Sydney the pre-season win over the second division state team. Reuben Agyei-Danso pulled one back for the Rams on 69 minutes.

Post-match, former Central Coast Mariners boss Arnold said he was pleased with the result.

“But tonight was more about putting into practice the high standards we’ve been setting on the training pitch and working on our structure," Arnold said

"That’s something we’ll continue to do throughout this pre-season but it’s a good start.

“It felt a bit strange pulling on a Sydney FC tracksuit at home before I came to the game but I’m very, very happy at the club.

“It’s a fantastic place to work, it’s a big job and a challenge I’m looking forward to."

The 2013 A-League Championship-winning coach began the game with a near full strength starting 11 as another ex-Mariner, Bernie Ibini, also made his debut alongside youngster Alex Gersbach at left back.

Alex Brosque pulled on a Sydney FC shirt for the first time since his return to the club as Australian marquee.

The game was played in three 30 minute periods, with Ivan Necevski in goals and Sebastian Ryall, Sasa Ognenovski, Matt Jurman, Terry Antonis and Ali Abbas also in the starting line-up.

The Sky Blues now head for New Zealand on Sunday where they will ramp up their pre-season, taking on English Premier League sides Newcastle United in Dunedin and West Ham United in Wellington.
