Aussies Abroad Weekend Wrap

WITH the majority of leagues across the globe enjoying a break due to international fixtures, only a handful of players were in action over the weekend. Young midfielders Bradden Inman and Massimo Luongo put in good performances in England, while Joel Griffiths starred for Qingdao Jonoon in their bid to avoid relegation in China.

In England’s League One, Bradden Inman scored a screamer for Crewe Alexandra in their shock 2-0 win over Preston North End. Crewe, winless in their past eight league games, took the lead against the run of play in the first half when Inman teed up Byron Moore who took his chance superbly. Inman then effectively finished the contest with a stunning goal midway through the second half, receiving Chuks Aneke’s pass and firing a bullet into the top corner from outside the box. Bailey Wright played a full game in defence for Preston.

Massimo Luongo found the back of the net for Swindon Town in their 4-0 thumping of Rotherham United. Luongo put his side 2-0 ahead on the stroke of half time with his deflected effort from the edge of the box looping over Rotherham ‘keeper Scott Shearer.

Elsewhere, James Meredith played a full game at left-back as Bradford City lost 1-0 to Tranmere Rovers.

In League Two, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff played a full game in defence as Burton Albion lost 1-0 to Southend United.

Ryan Williams was a 76th minute substitute as Oxford United beat Northampton Town 2-0. Ben McNamara was an unused substitute for Northampton.

Elsewhere, Aaron Downes was absent through injury as Torquay United lost 3-2 to Wycombe Wanderers.

In the Dutch Second Division, Travis Cooper was a 69th minute substitute as VVV Venlo lost 2-1 to FC Oss.

Elsewhere, Andrew Marveggio was an unused substitute as SC Telstar lost 3-2 to Helmond Sport.

In Ireland, Mark Griffin was a 50th minute substitute as Derry City played out a 0-0 draw with Shamrock Rovers.

In the Chinese Super League, Joel Griffiths scored a brace as Qingdao Jonoon jumped out of the relegation zone with a shock 4-1 win over high flying Tianjin Teda. Griffiths, who had scored just once prior to the clash, equalised for his side on 67 minutes, capitalising on some poor goalkeeping to tap home from close range. Griffiths then put the icing on the cake for his side with their fourth goal in the 95th minute, lashing a shot into the top corner from inside the box after receiving a cut-back. Erik Paartalu played a full game in midfield for Tianjin.

Elsewhere, Bernie Ibini played a full game as Shanghai SIPG lost 1-0 to Liaoning Whowin. Daniel McBreen was absent from the clash through suspension.
