Aussies Abroad weekend wrap
In round 2 of UEFA Champions League qualifying, both Tom Rogic and Jackson Irvine were not in the squad for Celtic as they won away at Icelandic champions KR Reykjavik. Adrian Zahra was not in the squad for Valetta FC as they lost 1-0 to Karabakh Agdam.
In round 2 of UEFA Europa League qualifying, Aziz Behich played a full match for Bursaspor in their goalless draw with Chikhura Sachkhere. Oliver Bozanic came on in the 75th minute as FC Luzern and St Johnstone drew 1-1. Mark Griffin was an unused substitute as Dundalk lost 2-0 at home to Hajduk Split. Anthony Carter was not in the squad as CFR Cluj and FK Jagodina played out a 0-0 draw.
In the opening round of the Prva Liga in Croatia, Steven Ugarkovic came on in the 67th minute as NK Osijek lost 4-1 to Lokomotiva Zagreb, for whom Tomislav Mrcela was an unused substitute. Frane Vladislavic was not in the squad as NK Istra 1961 drew 1-1 with HNK Hajduk Split.
In the Swiss Super League, Dario Vidosic played for Sion until the 60th minute while Oliver Bozanic was an unused substitute as the sides played out a 1-1 draw to open the 2014-15 season.
In the Irish Premier Division, Mark Griffin came on in the 87th minute of Dundalk FC’s 2-0 win over Athlone Town.
In the 2. Deild Karla in Iceland, Kile Kennedy played a full match as table-topping KF Fjarðabyggðar played out a 2-2 draw with IR Reykjavik.
In the Austrian Bundesliga, James Holland was not in the squad as FK Austria Wien drew 1-1 with SV Grodig in the opening game of the season.
In the FA Women’s Super League 1 in England, Danielle Brogan played a full match while Caitlin Friend came on in the 77th minute in Notts County LFC’s 1-0 home loss to Birmingham LFC. In another match, Brogan again played a full match while Friend played until the 70th minute as County were defeated 1-0 by Manchester City.
In the Japanese J-League, Josh Kennedy was not in the squad as Nagoya Grampus and Tokushima Vortis drew 1-1.
In the Nadeshiko League in Japan, Clare Polkinghorne played a full match and scored the fourth goal in INAC Kobe Leonessa’s 6-0 win over Univ Takahashi. Elise Kellond-Knight played a full match while Tameka Butt came on in the 79th minute as Iga FC Kunoichi lost 1-0 to Vegalta Sendai.
In the Korean K-League, Aleksandar Jovanovic played a full match for Jeju United in their 1-1 draw with FC Seoul. Alex Wilkinson played a full match as Jeonbuk FC ran out 6-0 winners over Sangju Sangmu. Luke DeVere played a full match as Gyeongnam FC went down 1-0 to Ulsan Hyundai. Robbie Cornthwaite was an unused substitute as Jeonnam Dragons won 2-0 against Seongnam FC.
In the Chinese Super League, Ryan McGowan played a full match as Shandong Luneng Taishan played out a goalless draw with Guangzhou Hengda. Adam Hughes played a full match for Ha’erbin Yiteng while Jonas Salley also played a full match for Guizhou Renhe as Ha’erbin beat Guizhou 4-0. Daniel McBreen opened the scoring in the 47th minute before being substituted in the 76th minute as Shanghai Dongya drew 1-1 with Tianjin Teda. Josh Mitchell was an unused substitute as Liaoning Hongyun lost 3-2 to Shanghai Ludi Shenhua.
In the Vietnamese V-League 1, Sam Gallagher was not in the squad as Ha Noi T&T drew 1-1 away to Song Lam Nghe An.
In the Thai Premier League, Erik Paartalu missed Muangthong United’s 2-2 draw with Ratchaburi FC due to a torn quad. No detailed information was available on Trent McClenahan, Michael Beauchamp and Matthew Thompson as PTT Rayong FC drew 1-1 with Buriram United.
In the semi-finals of the Singapore League Cup, Joseph Taylor played until half-time while Justin Pasfield was not in the squad (rested) as Tampines Rovers romped home 9-0 against Police SA.
In the Cambodian C-League, Adriano Pellegrino played a full match and set up a goal but it wasn’t enough as his league-leading Phnom Penh Crown lost 3-2 to Svay Rieng FC.
In the Dhivehi League in the Maldives, Dane Milovanovic played until the 64th minute as New Radiant SC beat Valencia 3-0. Earlier, Milovanovic played a full match and scored the opening goal as New Radiant ran out 4-1 winners over Eagles.
In Major League Soccer, Tim Cahill played until the 74th minute as New York Red Bulls drew 1-1 with San Jose Earthquakes. In another match, Cahill played the full 90 minutes as the Red Bulls lost 3-1 to Philadelphia Union. Despite these results, Cahill was this week named the Best MLS Athlete at the 2014 ESPYs as well as a member of the 2014 MLS All-star team. Elsewhere, Andy Rose was not in the squad as Seattle Sounders maintained top spot in the Western Conference with a 2-0 win over Portland Timbers.
In the National Women’s Soccer League in the United States, Samantha Kerr played a full match and scored the equalising goal in the 22nd minute as Western NY Flash drew 1-1 with FC Kansas City. The Flash were without goalkeeper Lydia Williams, who is out for the season with a knee injury, with Teigen Allen an unused substitute, while Katrina Gorry was also an unused substitute for Kansas City.
Elsewhere, Lisa De Vanna opened the scoring before being substituted in the 47th minute as Washington Spirit drew 1-1 with Houston Dash. Stephanie Catley played a full match and set up the opening goal in Portland Thorns 1-1 draw with Chicago Red Stars, while Emily van Egmond came on for Chicago in the 46th minute. Earlier, Catley played a full match and set up a goal, while Gorry played until the 63rd minute and scored a consolation goal as Portland Thorns trounced FC Kansas City 7-1.
In the North American W-League, Kristy Moore played a full match and scored the final goal as Ottawa Fury beat K-W United 4-0. Chloe Logarzo played a full match and set up the opening goal, Tara Andrews came on in the 82nd minute and Ashley Spina was an unused substitute as Colorado Pride went down to Los Angeles Blues 2-1. In another match, Logarzo was an unused substitute, Andrews played until the 65th minute, scoring one goal and setting up another, while Spina played until the 76th minute, scoring two and setting up a third as Colorado beat Sedona FC Strikers 6-0. In the USL Pro, Yahaya Musa played a full match while Albert Edward came on in the 12th minute as Wilmington Hammerheads played out a scoreless draw with Harrisburg C. Islanders. Harrison Delbridge was an unused substitute for Sacramento Republic as they drew 0-0 with Orlando City SC. Delbridge was again an unused substitute in another match as Sacramento won 1-0 away at Charlotte Eagles.
In the USL Premier Development League – Great Lakes Division, Aaron Schneebeli started and set up the opening goal as Forest City London beat Pittsburgh Riverhounds 4-1.
This week also saw a host of pre-season friendly matches played all across Europe.
Adam Sarota came on in the 72nd minute as FC Utrecht beat Dundee United 2-1.
Chris Ikonomidis came on in the 46th minute as SS Lazio won 2-0 against Indonesia’s Under 23 side.
Andrew Marveggio featured in the starting eleven for Fortuna Sittard as they lost 1-0 to Feyenoord.
Ben Halloran played until half-time as Fortuna Düsseldorf beat Austria Salzburg 5-1. In another match, Halloran came on in the 56th minute as Fortuna drew 1-1 with Lokomotiv Moskva.
Former Socceroos keeper Mark Schwarzer played until the 69th minute as Chelsea beat AFC Wimbledon 3-2. In another match, Schwarzer played until the 75th minute and kept a clean sheet as Chelsea beat Wycombe Wanderers 5-0.
Shane Cansdell-Sherriff came on in the 46th minute as Burton Albion defeated Sheffield United 4-0.
Bradden Inman played until the 68th minute as Crewe Alexandra drew 1-1 with Chester FC.
Fulham beat Crawley Town 2-0 with three Australian’s featuring - Cameron Burgess played the full match, Ryan Williams played until the 54th minute and new signing Adam Taggart came on in the 46th minute.
Eli Babalj started for AZ Alkmaar before being substituted in the 68th minute of AZ’s 0-0 draw with NEC Nijmegen.
Liverpool came back from 1-0 down to beat Preston 2-1 with Bailey Wright and Neil Kilkenny both playing for Preston until half-time, while Brad Jones played a full match for Liverpool with Brad Smith an unused substitute. In an earlier match, Jones and Smith were both in the starting eleven for Liverpool as they lost 2-1 away at Brondby IF.
James Meredith came on for Bradford City in the 63rd minute as they beat Shelbourne FC 4-0.
Gethin Jones played the first half for Everton’s under 21 team as they went down 2-1 to Southport FC.
James Wesolowski played a full match for Shrewsbury Town in their 2-2 draw with Watford. In another match, Wesolowski played a full match as Shrewsbury lost 2-1 to Premier League outfit West Bromwich Albion.
Scott McDonald played until halftime for Milwall in their 2-2 draw with Stevenage FC.

Trent Sainsbury played a full match as PEC Zwolle came from behind to defeat PAOK Saloniki 2-1.
Matt Ryan played a full match and kept a clean sheet as Club Brugge KV played out a goalless draw with Girondins Bordeaux. In another match, Ryan played until the 60th minute and kept a clean sheet as Club Brugge KV were held to a 1-1 draw with KMSK Deinze.
Chris Herd came on in the 46th minute as Aston Villa beat Mansfield Town 3-1.
Massimo Luongo played until the 68th minute as Swindon Town lost 2-0 to Eastleigh FC.
Harry Ascroft came on in the 46th minute as VVV-Venlo were soundly beaten 6-2 by Portuguese giants FC Porto.
Mathew Leckie played until half-time as FC Ingolstadt 04 drew 1-1 with Red Bull Salzburg.
