FA charge Aussie player over betting breaches

Australian James Demetriou has landed himself in hot water with the Football Association for allegedly flouting its betting rules.

Swansea City's Demetriou has been charged by the Football Association over an alleged "multiple breaches" of betting regulations.

The 19-year-old striker joined Swansea from Nottingham Forest in August on a free transfer last year but is yet to make his senior debut.

He has until June 1 to respond to the charge.

Just this week, Ipswich Town midfielder Teddy Bishop was charged over similar allegations.

Demetriou has played for Cyprus’s Under-21 side but the Sydney-born attacker says his dream is to represent the country of birth.

Earlier this year he told FourFourTwo: “It’s a lifelong dream to play for the Socceroos and I desperately hope that one day I will achieve it.”
