Injury blow for Holland

Socceroo James Holland’s availability for Australia’s upcoming friendlies is in doubt after suffering an ankle injury playing for Austria Wien overnight.

Holland had to be replaced after 26 minutes in Austria Wien’s 0-0 draw with Grodig in the Austrian Bundesliga on Saturday.

The 25-year-old midfielder sustained the injury after a nasty tackle from Grodig’s Timo Brauer.

Holland received treatment on the sidelines for several minutes before the call was made to replace him with Mario Leitgeb.

Earlier this week Holland was one of 23 players called up for Australia’s squad for friendlies against UAE and Qatar.

The former AZ Alkmaar man has been a regular in Socceroos squads under coach Ange Postecoglou, but hasn’t played since the pre-World Cup friendly against Croatia.

The Socceroos face UAE in Abu Dhabi on October 10, before taking on Qatar in Doha four days later.
