AUSTRALIA’S 2014 World Cup campaign has been dealt a cruel blow with key Socceroo Robbie Kruse set to be ruled out after suffering a serious knee injury.
The 25-year-old tore his anterior cruciate ligament in training with his German club Bayer Leverkusen on Friday and scans on Saturday have revealed the devastating injury.
Leverkusen have confirmed Kruse will miss the rest of the 2013-14 Bundesliga season and appears likely to miss the World Cup in Brazil too.
Kruse, who won the Professional Footballers’ Association Footballer of the Year award in 2013, will undergo an operation on his left knee next week.
The former Melbourne Victory has rose in prominence at international level in the past 12 months, marked by his display in the vital 4-0 win over Jordan in World Cup qualifying where he provided two assists and scored one goal of his own.
Kruse had made 15 Bundesliga appearances and scored two goals for Leverkusen this season since his switch from Fortuna Dusseldorf.3 comments
